This is great and sad at the same time - great because it is being written about and talked about but sad because it did not have to happen. Your singing in my choir now! I write about this sort of thing. I would love the opportunity to write about this as well as other stories. Feel free to PM me with any more details or other tails of failure costing serious bucks.

You spent $.07 cents on a spring?

I would of just gone to the office supply cabinet and stole a Bic Ball Point Pen and took the spring out of it.

betcha it'd of worked fine too.

I pulled the spring out of stock and it ended being a $0.07 spring. So we even had it in the facility.

Did you get a $2.5M raise?

I run a small machine shop/manufacturing facility, so I feel your pain.

Speedy,

Well done!

I don't work at machining, or in any sort of manufacturing facility, but have see the end results of "that's the way it's always been" thinking.

Well spotted and good detective work.

If the 'cost' was $2.5M, then isn't a new machine, which might double the output, easily justifiable?

Can ya make me some 5-40 fillister heard screws out of 1001 steel with a perfectly formed head shape based on a provided sample? I need about 10,000...
