It's about $2.95 - $2.98 for regular here in Mount Pleasant/Charleston.

Our total gas bill for 3 cars was $572 last month. With my F150 getting 12 mpg, I'm going to sell it after I sell the 930. Then I'll get the BMW 3 series and hopefully talk my wife into getting something that uses regular and gets even better mpg.

We're fine as a one income household as we are today actually. In six months we'll be better off because she'll finally have completed her business degree and one big expense will be gone. The price of gas doesn't really mean anything in terms of my job; actually the price of jet fuel going up might help us out some since what we make is designed to be much more efficient than what it replaces.

We're used to living within our means. I'm an engineer and budgeting is like thermo. Savings + expenses going "out" can't be greater than what's coming "in."

I'm still in a hotel in Mt Pleasant near the IOP connector for the time being - any advice on where good places to fill up are? I pretty much know what's on and near Hwy 17 and that's about it. I've been up Hwy 41 a few times... way too much traffic for me over there.

I really don't understand why people buy 90+ octane fuel unless they're towing, tracking, high altitude, or very high temps. Otherwise, 87 octane will do just fine in almost any modern car

My 530i supposively requires Premium. So does the high CR of the Ducati.

Supposedly is the key

And a Ducati isn't the same type of deal as a modern car
You could use 87 octane in your 530 this time of year and have zero issues

I agree. Detonation control is not just octane.

Detonation also occurs with high temperature (it's cold in IL this time of year), high altitude (you're <1000ft), high throttle position (more fuel 'trying' to be combusted), high load (heat soak and throttle position), etc

Modern cars have such sophisticated powertrain controls that higher octane numbers really just mean higher horsepower 'potential', and lower likely doesn't mean a whole lot other than a loss in peak horsepower numbers at or near full throttle. At less than full throttle, the car won't likely know the difference. How often are you at full throttle?

Furthermore, most places now blend in a bit of ethanol, esp in winter, that helps pre-detonation anyway.

Not that the extra 10 cents per gallon for premium is going to add up to a whole lot over the course of a year. But NEEDING premium fuel is largely a rated-horspower afraid-we're-gonna-get-sued manufacturer's CYA.

Probably because my Mustang (Bullitt models only) has a "tune" that yields more power on premium. Says so right in the owner's manual.

Mount Pleasant always has the highest gas prices it seems. If you get up to North Charleston, it's cheaper there (or has been).

The BP on Coleman Blvd was cheaper by a few cents. The BP at 17 and 41 is neck and neck with the Texaco/Kanagroo up 41 a bit, as is the BP up 41 by the river. On Clements Ferry, the BP is high but the Kangaroo across the street is about par with others.

On 17 near you, I think the Hess station before I-526 is probably the cheapest.

Do you work for Boeing?

I don't usually feel the need to 'support' Tabs, as he is capable of doing that himself. But pointing out the decline in the greenback is relevant. The 'cause' of the decline is parfy.

Gas price

My take is everyone has a bit of the reason the price is up.

Here in the Peoples Republic of Illinois -reg is over 3.20 - much of it due to taxation without representation.

Now I work in the gas and oil business --supply is good -reserves OK and demand only on the rise slightly- Speculation's effect here started a bit ago when your buds at OPEC said they thought the new ceiling or should we call it the floor for oil should be about 85.00 --the speculators took over and here we are.

Absolutely the declining buck is having an impact - the inflation thing is out there and only being controlled by high and under employment -- the bit about low inflation is claptrap anyway.

The issues with the economy will be here at least ten more years as the standard on living in the ol USA continues to tank from its high in 1974.

tabs tends to get fixated on one thing, and finds a reason to attribute everything to that one thing.

i need to transfer to a closer tunnel project. i should do it! i could ride a bike to the office. it is about 12-15 miles each way.

hilly tho. my heart and body fat would benefit.

but i love my current project, and i'm lazy.

gas at $4 would be a great motivation.

If it had a tune that yielded more power on 105 octane (as listed in the manual and on the filler neck), would you buy it daily? How about nitromethane?

The point is that your Bullitt will run just fine on the crap 85 octane they sell on the West coast. It won't like full throttle as well, and it won't run as quickly from the well-tuned 944s, but it will make it A to B indefinitely without hurting the engine.

BTW Paul, we have a Lincoln Aviator with the same basic 4.6L DOHC 32V motor as your Bullitt. 91oct required, says in the manual and gas door. We've run almost 100K miles on 87 octane (it currently has 161K miles). No issues, no pinging, no hiccups, no problems. But it's not being run at the gymkhana either. YMMV.
