after a few minutes of talking with her family..
one of them is sure to say..
well I declare..
Mt. Airy NC ( Mayberry)..

I'm from Germany..
for such a small country..
N & S will talk right past each other..
Berliners are from Mars for sure..
Germans speak & use 'Hoch Deutsch' to impress & communicate with each..
but quickly resort to dialect in private..

This was a very painful thread to read. The lazy grammar really kills me. I spent 4years in Columbus, Ohio. Not only does "to be" not exist there, but "cash" is "caysh" and "crash" is "craysh"; makes me cringe.

Much of Jagoffs rippin on us yinzers.

I had to have my cousin translate for the counter worker at a KFC in Atlanta a few years ago. Southern ebonics had me lost. Turned out she asked what side I wanted.

God bless you for loving where you are though. No doubt there are some nice things about the area, but everything I like I could catch in a long weekend.

The funny thing about the dialect is that I have absolutely no clue what Targa is talking about. I have spent roughly 20 years in PA, and haven't come across anyone who talks like that. Even grew up in a heavily PA dutch area. Just to show how different parts of the state can be.

I find a lot of the accent around Philly is fake or forced. For example 99% of the people who say iggles, when they see the predatory bird flying in the sky will say EAGLE clear as a bell.

That is my point. You don't realize it or hear it because you are from here. It's so normal for you you don't hear it. I hear it because I'm not from here.

I'll be sure to.pay attention and see if I hear people not use the "to be." The only specific time I notice what you are referring to is when a Philadelphian is going somewhere. They'll say "going down the shore." Instead of going down to the shore.

I was gone for 14 years so you'd think I would notice more often.

You'll never hear Yinz here (which BTW is about as often as you'll see an eagle in the sky in philthy) but you will hear youz. As in, "youz guys get over here."

You do all realize that "Dutch" is mistakenly used for Deutche but nobody realized the Germans were not saying they were from Holland
