My Cat Are Fat

Four cats. One is fat. One was skinny, is passing through okay on her way to fat. One would be fat but the others scare him away from the food. One is growing from a kitten into the biggest of the four, not fat. Anyway, we leave dry food out all the time. Thinking about changing to a regular feeding schedule. But don't want to do it 2x day. Is once in the morning okay? Also, I hate wet cat food - yucky. Anyone make their cat food - I was thinking ground meat, a bit of rice, a bit of carrot, something like that?

They die sooner, and get sick easier.

We went through a similar problem. First thing our vet recommended was to not leave food out constantly. Our cat is/was not a good self regulator. She should weigh around 8 lbs, but had gotten closer to 11, or almost 40% overweight. Significantly higher chances of heart and arthritis problems, feline diabetes, etc come with the extra weight. A likely much shorter lifespan.

Although you don't want to feed twice a day, that's what we were advised to do. 1/3 cup of dry food (Science Diet, adult, lite in our case) in the morning and again at night. I substitute some canned wet food once in awhile.

Took a few months, but the cat is back to her proper weight.

Not sure how you'll manage that with multiple cats, though.

I wouldn't mess with wet foot for any pet.
Feed the cats once a day when you have time to wait for them to finish up,. Split them up individually or in groups that make sense where you can properly dose their intake.
Much easier to have a skinny pet than a skinny self, that's for sure. All my animals are very trim and fit.

Fat Freddy's cat used to crap in his shoe.

Stop feeding them wet food, get some low calorie dry. Put it out for an hour in the AM and one in the PM.

Our two cats always have dry food available outside, where the cats are located. They haven't gotten fat in nine years.

So a fat cat has a shorter life span, time to open another can for those lazy, furniture scratching SOBs.

Just moved the cats outside last Summer. The fat one slimmed down fairly quickly. I leave dry food out 24/7 and feed a half can of tuna in the morning. 99 cent store 5 oz cans of "human consumption" tuna is about 40% cheaper than the better cat food out there.

I think someone in the neighborhood is feeding my (indoor/outdoor) cats. Their food intake (by our count) is going down, but they're still getting fat.

Cats are really good at setting up a "route" to go hit up all the neighbors. Mine stay in the yard, but opossums and the local (fat) raccoon sometimes raid their food dish.
