this laptop will get smashed

On another forum I belong to, we have "death on the driveway" - posts of appliances and such that have pissed us off, and suffered a horrible death on the driveway.

This laptop is about to suffer the same fate.

I installed Windows 7 Ultimate after Vista had been having problems.

So far, a clean install of Windows 7 is having the same issue. Not to mention extremely sporadic connection issues. Sometimes it'll load a page, sometimes there's no connection. Like a little child inside playing with the wireless switch.

I installed a few hardware drivers...touchpad, audio, wireless... and then it refused to boot. It froze at exactly the moment the swirly Microsoft logo lights start to appear.. one little speck of orange above "Starting Windows" (I think that's what it said)

I'll give this laptop 24 hours. Then it suffers Death on the Driveway.

I got a successful reboot after trying a system restore with the AV disabled. Had to restore to a point before AV was installed, so it didn't block the restore. No sure if that had anything to do with it.
So far, I haven't tried rebooting again, but I'm still getting very spotty connection issues. One second, Pelican will work, the next it won't... same for any site.

I'm having an issue choosing the right drivers from HP's website, I think. They list several drivers for different hardware configs. This is a Dv9000.. which apparently come in different sub0models. dv9700..(also listed on this machine). specifically, I think this is a dv9827cl...
... but look at all the multiple driver choices! Software & Driver Downloads HP Pavilion dv9827cl Entertainment Notebook PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

(It took three attempts to post this due to connection issues)

yeah, it sucks. Laptop is cheap nowaday. Throw it away and get a new one, but before you throw it away, can you box it, drive to USPS, and send it my way? Include Wolfe and Vas, now I have 2 laptops

Or send it to my son. He says he would probably install BSD on it (a Linux system).
I have an old LG he resurrected years ago, running on Fedora. It was given to him because it wouldn't load Windows.

Hate to see a functioning tool put down without a second chance. After all, it might be the software, rather than the device.

Either way, good luck.

I had a Garmin GPS. It couldn't find the satellite. Help says to get in an open area. Can't get to much more wide open than where I live. So I gave it one more try. I drove down the road to the Shell station to get gas. It still had not found the mother ship. I calmly unhooked the thing and SMASHED it on the ground at the gas station, picked it up and threw it in the trash. I still feel good about it.

Nice thread Wolf.

Wolfe,
The laptop you are working on,
Does it by chance have an AMD CPU with an Nvidia GPU chipset?
The symptoms you describe sounds like a known issue with that combination. The heat gets so great that the solder joints open up on the GPU and causes intermittent glitches, Typically the wireless nic will work off and on then not at all...eventually the system board will completely fail and never post ( power on self test ) again.....
The Nvida chip controls the video and NIC. sometimes I can reflow them and fix them but even that is often temporary. A few months at best.
