Richard, thanks! I love that you keep me in the loop. I don't have TV so when you tell me something, I tune in online. You are awesome! Always wanted to go to Fiji...

And Max, right? Surfers have rocking bodies. Both male and female. ;)

tevake 06-08-2012 11:53 AM

Hey Tweez, I'm happy to help you and others here to tune in on some awesome action that pro surfing is bring to us in ever better coverage from around the world. The current contest schedule and format is accessing the best spots at the right time of year to score Da Kine as we say here in Hawaii. Plus the quality of camera work and live streaming brings it to all of us :-)

2012 Volcom Fiji Pro: Day 2 Highlights | ASP World Tour, Photos | Transworld Surf

Fiji is a wonderful place to visit, some of the friendliest people on earth, beautiful islands, even more beautiful underwater, plus great surf. Not many places for novice surfing. But the diving can almost make up for that.
Good news is that the Fijians have realized that they should stop charging money for access to the surf. I've been lucky to have spent two seasons cruising in Fiji. and was not happy to be told that there was a fee to surf. After sailing great distances to get there, and spend a fair bit of cash while there that bit really did sting. Sounds like they have sorted it out now :-)
The Fijian culture is very alive on the outer islands.

Very cool Richard - thanks as well for posting these excellent links!

The Aussies are charging...yeah! :p

Never been to Fiji myself but a lot of the local boys here have gone several times and had a blast. One good friend of mine is going back again (I think it will be his 3rd time) with his 2 sons who surf as he is nearing 60 and wants to make it count. Great story about how surfing shapes one's life.

Cheers! :)

Hey Sydney - Good for you! Never been there but as it's on the Gulf Coast typically the surf is not that great. However if you are new at it that could be a positive as long as there's something to push the board along (with you on it of course).

I just found this on YouTube:

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/6YmJ9A4XKF4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

And this Destin surf school through a Google search....maybe ask them and please keep us posted as appropriate - this is the thread for all things wave-riding!!!

So cool, Baz! Maybe it will be better on the gulf side, gentler waves? Those waves didn't look so bad in the video. Tell us how you do, Sidney! Woo hoo! I might not be the greenest gremmie anymore! :)

porsche4life 06-09-2012 04:43 PM

Thx Baz... I'll do some checking on the way down and see if I can get a few hours lined up at least...

Baz 06-11-2012 03:38 AM

Cool Sidney....have fun and don't forget to post a pic or two....surfing can be very scenic you know....

You are right some eye popping scenery of all sorts, even some waves like this.

Massive swell sets stage for unforgettable big-wave surfing session

Could pop more than eyes.

Like I said before DA KINE

Cheers Rich

Beautiful Byron Bay:

Bill Douglas 06-17-2012 08:37 PM

Baz, that's my favorite place in the world!

And I've enjoyed some big waves on that point :)

Geary 06-18-2012 07:11 AM

I've spent a couple 2-week vacations there, renting a house at the small bay just south of Byron. Fun times .. most afternoons spent at Hogan's wide open bar on the main corner. One evening they played a Maui underground surf film (all my old buddies) on the back screen. I could have settled in real easy (and a couple friends did move there permanently).

Baz 06-18-2012 07:40 AM

Cool guys...I have a good buddy in Lennox Head just around the corner. Going to visit next year. Beautiful country.....

Geary 06-18-2012 12:09 PM

George Greenough has an interesting house at Lennox, up above the south end. Great waves at Lennox on days Byron doesn't have much.

I posted a pic like that in the "butts" thread, and Z-man deleted it.

But I think there's more artistic merit in this one...

tweezers74 07-01-2012 04:23 PM

I agree. Something chill and pretty about that picture. Anyone surfed naked before? ;)

VINMAN 07-01-2012 04:40 PM

Bubble gum surf wax and exposed private parts don't mix well....

Tweez....if one has never surfed naked before.....one is not a true soul surfer.

In the days before the southern part of our barrier island was raped by the condo developers.....and before the Feds built Canaveral Seashore Park....we used to surf "Secret Spot" and on occasion in the buff. It was of course a hoot!

Talk about freedom rides.....ha!

The reason that photo appeals to you - is it is appealing to your inner soul - which recognizes the concept of being a free spirit. Not everyone has the spirit, which is a common denominator amongst true soul surfers.

:)

that's it. I have to go surfing naked. :) Need to find someone to go with. I am thinking somewhere warm and gentle waves. Don't want to totally wipe out when I am naked!

And the last part of your message, so true. That part hit me. You speak to me, Baz. :)

Baz 07-01-2012 05:18 PM

I know Tweez.....you have the spirit - and will always.....

Just want to say as a flatlander, really enjoying this thread and envy those who live for it. Definitely one of the better threads! Very much a novice here and only get occasional chances when visiting family on the west coast.

Terrific photography. Late last night was surprised to see the classic Endless Summer ('66) on some cable channel. Made me think how far today's photographers and surfers have come, amazing talent and brave!!
Cheers- Scott
