Thanks, Baz for all the videos... loved the last one. Old school.

I am thinking of taking Ikaika for his virgin ride in San Diego next month. Need to get him ready. I am buying a fin for him... any advice? I want to get just a single fin. What is the difference between sizes? ie: 7" vs. 9"?

Is wax just wax or does type matter? Remember I am a rookie at all of this! Any advice would be greatly appreciated. So stoked to get him in the water. Hopefully we fall in love with each other on our first date...

mph911 02-26-2012 02:02 AM

Go Tweez! The local surf shop will help you choose a fin. Same with wax. Waxes vary depending on temp. ie.. soft wax for cold water and hard wax when its warmer (melting point).
Have fun :)

Tweez.....please remember that you are a gremmie, not a rookie! There is a distinction. ;)

A longer fin, in my opinion, would suit you better for now because it will help stabilize your board when you make turns. A stable board = a stable rider.

I use Sex Wax myself but there are other brands out there that could also be as good that I haven't tried. So for now my vote is for Sex Wax. As mph911 said....there are specific formulations for different temps of water...softer for cold water and harder for warm water. Just stop at a surf shop if necessary and they will know which one is best for where you are surfing. As a snowboarder you may have used Sex Wax already. Here's a link with more info: Zog's Sex Wax

Ikaika is a lucky dude to have such a dedicated soul surfer as his rider!

Cowabunga and keep us posted! SmileWavy

lowyder993s 02-27-2012 06:05 PM

We've been using sticky bumps...if Ikaika is clean, start w/ a bar of base then cool water for next month. Let me know if you want company in the water. Heading 8 west to O.B.? Jim

More stoke for you Tweez......an excellent video of legendary Mr. Bob McTavish, an Australian who pioneered a lot of the hot dog riding style of surfing in the long board era. Bob was and still is a significant innovator of surfboard design, to say the least.

Thanks, Baz for the video... he makes it look so easy. I liked hearing him talk about the board and all the parts too. Really interesting.

Watch this video... so inspiring! I don't remember if I told you guys but I learned how to surf when I was legally blind in one eye. I had always wanted to learn how to surf and when I lost eyesight in one eye, I thought I better get to it before I lost sight in the other. Luckily, after being legally blind for a year and a half, a procedure worked and I can see better now. But if I ever lost my sight again, this kid inspires me that I could still do it! Amazing! Love stories like this... :)

tweezers74 03-01-2012 02:33 PM

And by the way, Baz, please clarify gremmie for me. ;)

Tweez......thanks for this video and I agree - amazingly inspirational! No I didn't know about your eyesight situation but good for you to power through and overcome that issue! We all take what we have for granted. One of the biggest challenges every day is to stop and be thankful for what we have....for it may be gone tomorrow....

Like Zeke said.

Urban Dictionary: Gremmie

"a young or inexperienced surfer, especially one whose behavior is objectionable."

;)

mph911 03-20-2012 06:28 PM

Bells Beach last week...

I hate it when you open a thread page and some music starts automatically.

You get a "What's Wrong With You?" WWWY

tweezers74 03-25-2012 10:10 AM

Matt! Gorgeous picture of Bells Beach! I want to go to Australia so bad. Was looking at vacation packages last week even... dreaming.

Baz, I would say I am inexperienced for sure and yes, sometimes my behavior is objectionable, but young... not so much. But I will take the new nickname of Gremmie! ;)

Haven't taken Ikaika out for a ride yet. Was gonna go to San Diego but trip nanny fell through so hung out with my boys in Laguna instead. Will have to ride those waves soon!

Hang ten, guys! Love, The Gremmie. :D

Sad news from down under.....legend Michael Peterson has passed away.

He left his mark - I reckon that's enough sometimes.

If you ever venture this way I'll take you surfing. I have plenty of boards you can use :)

tweezers74 04-01-2012 08:53 AM

mph911, are you kidding me? That would be sooooooo AWESOME!!! To say I surfed (or tried to and survived) in Australia?!!!! Holy schmoly! One of the things on my bucket list for sure!!

Btw, I am jumping up and down and doing a happy dance... Be glad PPOT doesn't have webcam. ;)

Not really, Baz, those guys know what they are doing and you have a lot of control over your the rig with the help of the wind. Is is rather easy to control your entry and exit from the waves. After all, it is a wind-powered surf board! Been there, done that, though not in those waves.

Yeah - I meant "INSANE" in a good way....the wave - the rider - the board - the photo - everything!

I did some windsurfing myself during a stint on the Gulf Coast of Florida (Ft. Myers area) - we had some really nice windy days but of course no waves to match but I guess that was the point - wind-powered as you say. ;)

Paul McCartney recruited award-winning surf filmmaker Jack McCoy to create a music video for his previously unreleased track "Blue Sway." Written nearly 20 years ago, McCartney's never-before released song, "Blue Sway," is available for the first time on the bonus audio disc of the special edition of McCartney II. The music video created by McCoy is also featured on the bonus DVD included in the set. McCartney II will be released on June 14th by MPL and Concord Music Group.

Jack McCoy has been capturing the surfing vision in a truly unique way. Using a high powered underwater jet ski, the filmmaker found that he was able to travel behind a wave, creating underwater images that have never been seen before.

Over the past couple of years, McCoy set out to capture footage for his surf film, A Deeper Shade of Blue. During the editing process, McCoy put one of his surfing sequences to a song off McCartney's The Fireman album. A mutual friend, Chris Thomas, saw the footage while visiting McCoy in Australia, and when he returned to the UK he gave McCartney a copy of the sequence.

"Paul was pretty stoked with what I'd created. He immediately thought my images might be suitable to go with his unreleased song "Blue Sway." said McCoy.

McCoy spent the next six weeks creating the music video, while also working full days on making A Deeper Shade of Blue. McCoy compiled and edited footage that he filmed off Tahiti's Teahupoo reef to create what became the "Blue Sway" video.

"When I saw Jack McCoy's underwater surfing footage put to the soundtrack of "Blue Sway" I was blown away," said McCartney.

"Blue Sway" won 'Best Music Video' at NYC BE FILM Short Festival this past May, and the video will be featured as part of Surfrider Foundation's summer PSA campaign. Surfrider Foundation is a non-profit grassroots organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of our world's oceans, waves and beaches.

Bazza, yet another outstanding video offering, thanks bro.
the first couple of upside down shots were a little disorienting for me, but beautiful
One of the big adjustments to surfing in Tahiti is the water clarity, as you start to take the drop and look down it seems that the reef is dry cause you see right thru the water. a bit of a shocker at first. We've got some clean water here in Hawaii, but it is a whole nuther thing in Tahiti.

As to wind surfing big waves, its all real easy til it isn't. I have had long sessions in double mast high waves all most dry headed. But then it can easily go from stoking good fun to piled up well offshore in the impact zone with a bunch of broken gear, lots of current trying to take where you don't want to go. And only half a board to paddle in on or just swimming. The classic hero to zero situation that takes just a moment to happen. Its all good tho, once you make it back to the beach. BTDT.

Cheers Richard

Oh Baz, I love my thread! Such good stoke going on here. :) Love that Cowabunga pic! I think I need to get a yellow bikini like that. Haven't been able to get on my board. :( I am going to be in San Diego for a week next month for work so maybe I will be able to get out in the water. Not with my board but maybe a rental. Get it in when you can, right?

And Tahiti sounds absolutely awesome, Richard. Hmmmm... Maybe that should be my next trip. Always wanted to go. Wanna meet me there? Lol!

porwolf 05-01-2012 08:02 PM

A little more windsurfing, Maui 1995. Been there done that:

trader220 05-02-2012 08:16 AM

8 a crowd? try some of the better spots I surf when there is a nice swell. 8 would be the number of guys paddling for every wave.

One of the better threads here Tweez....nice work!

Looks like the waves might be fun today so I guess I'll go get wet for a bit.....still not as good as I'd like but it will do for now.....
