I only have a couple of my old sticks - I bet many surfers had very special boards they wish they had kept. For me it was always trade in my old shooter when I got a new one. I had a Nuuhiwa fish I wish I had kept, more than anything else. Very iconic board.

Surfed today, waves a little overhead, not great but we take what we can get here.
Still COLD - won't this spring EVER fire up ???!!!
It is warmer IN the water than out.
Still haven't had the car out.
Bikes , yes but COLD.

We are up to the low 70's now water temp. - you should be warmed up too by now. :)

Anyhow - the fellow who shaped my friends gun is named Muniz

I forget his first name - chalk it up to hypothermia - I want to say Mickey but Mickey MunOz was a whole nother animal I imagine.
Still think that is what he said;
Mickey MunIz , from San Juan.

Yeah 2 separate animals for sure. My friend is Bill Geiger and his wife's name is Becky...and they have kids. I gotta get back down there and feed my soul...

I found another pic from our '73 trip to Rincon. This is at Kuhuna's Guest House in Punta - that's his bus. I'm the third from the right. My 2 buddies who came with me are Pat Altes - far left and Jack Reilly - to my immediate right. The 2 guys on the right were from South Carolina and I don't remember who the dude is with the pan. Good times....traveling is the best part of surfing - I truly believe that...

Ended up going back with a friend who was in the army and we stayed at Remy at the officers club and getting lots of waves to ourselves on base. Quick trip but really fun.

Very cool - any pics of the place back then?

Fast forward to more resent past. I found a video that shows the job I used to do running charter boats here on Kauai that I want to share, Think you may enjoy it. Some local budding surf stars did the video and do add to the scenery a bit.

NICE! You're talking about the dolphins, right Richard?

I've been doing a little re-organizing and ran across some old stuff - surf mags....here's a great shot of the late great Ronnie Burns.....

The other thread we were sharing our stories about Brevard County, Florida....I also found an old ribbon from a longboard surfing contest in 1974 in Cocoa Beach...honorable mention - they probably gave everyone one of these....;)

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1367372224.jpg

Used to surf in contests down there a LOT while in the E.S.A. and also the annual Easter contest at the pier.

We drove down there one morning for a contest and it was raining so hard it peeled a bunch of paint off my car - I'll never forget that....lol.

Those are good surfing memories, Baz. Nice to hear stories. I would have liked an honorable mention ribbon. :)

Yo Tweeze....very good to hear from you - love to see you get back in the water this year at some point. We need more content from you! ;)

And you don't need a ribbon to get an honorable mention - that's a given!

Thanks for one of the coolest threads on PPOT!

I do need to get back in the water. I feel like I would be starting over. I need the water. Going through some stuff and I think the water will help me chill.

And yes, I agree, it is one of the coolest threads on PPOT!

Guys I'm watching a replay of the 2012 Fiji Volcom , on the cable surf channel. This is not to missed, if you can find it.
Going to keep it brief. As I'm on a touch screen I pad and have lost two earlier attempts to post. More later.

Cheers Richard

Look for the free surf session on day three, better than. The code red day in Tahiti!!!

Baz, I enjoyed the memories of the days in Fla, more when I get the IMac repaired.

Hang in there Tweeze, I'm sure things will come around for you!!

Cheers Richard

Thanks, Richard. I am over it and looking to buy a longboard skateboard for my Mother's Day/Birthday present to myself to cheer me up!

Love love love this video. Check it out guys. Love the gloomy skies. Makes for interesting surfing. Love the song too.

We're starting over every day, water or not. Roll with it.

Good on ya, little sister, always more fun ahead if you are ready for it.

Excellent video. Intense action in situations of consequences! Wonder if that is shot in Ireland? Great song!

Cheers Richard

As you know, the pavement is a lot less forgiving. I was pretty good on a skateboard in the old fashioned sense. I grew up with the first generations. Although I'm sure I could ride my old Majarahja, I won't. Broken bones will keep you out of the water for quite awhile.

Be uber careful if you buy that longboard. Yes, even a longboard.

OTOH, get up on the nose! :D

This is the one I want. :) And believe me. I am going to be wearing all the safety gear even though I will look like a gremmie. I am old. I need to protect myself. But I ain't gonna stop having fun!

Yes it was. Very cute girl. I always liked freckles. Probably because I could never have them. There is something about them that makes me smile. Love the name Peanut Butter for her board. When I get my skateboard, I will have to name him. He will join Armando (snowboard) and Ikaika (surfboard).

Good call Richard - indeed that is Ireland. Impressive surf, surfing, and video. Brrr...too cold for me!

Thanks Tweez! :)

Those are some very impressive photos of your son, Geary. Hotdoggin' is right! :D

I thought the photo quality was just fine - we all have old photos in various conditions - it's all good if surfing content!

Thanks for the cool post!

Wow! Whenever I look at pics like that, I am so amazed. What it must feel like to be able to do that! What a rush! I always get a slight rush watching snowboarding and surfing videos. I always wonder what it would be like to ride a barrel. To see the inside of water. Just amazing!

Love the second and third pic. If that was me, I would get that second one blown up poster size. Simply awesome.

OK .. not action material, but this photo is too sweet not to share with you snowboarders:

Are you a little bug in my head, Geary? ;) I just bought a new leash for my surfboard.

And I am going snowboarding next weekend, so this pic is so timely. Trying to get a couple more riding highs in before the snow goes away. Although I hear Mammoth is going to stay open all summer. Whether its the ocean or the snow, it's always good. :)

Geary 05-05-2013 03:58 PM

Get it while you can, Tweez .. Mammoth's on my radar too. I doubt they'll be open 'til July 4th this season, but they've still got some good carving runs open presently. (Great recent news that Mammoth is reopening June Mountain next year.)

I have never been to Mammoth though I have heard its awesome. I am going to Colorado. Might try to go the next two weekends if I can swing it. Then it's focusing on getting to San Diego with my surfboard. :)

Yeah, give us the scoop!

And woo hoooo!!!! Was able to mix business with pleasure. Going snowboarding this coming weekend and next weekend in Colorado! So stoked. Can't wait to get in that snow! Wonder if its still good. But anything is better than AZ snow... Which is nothing right now! Ready to get my stoke on. My head needs it.

Shaun @ Tru6 05-06-2013 03:22 AM

Surfing shirts for Fall. Sadly, I think this is the closest I'll ever be to surfing again.

I really like the top one, Shaun!

And why no more surfing? Because of injuries from your accident? That makes me sad. :(

Shaun @ Tru6 05-06-2013 06:50 AM

Yeah, my right hip isn't what it used to be, at least I can bike so am thankful for that. Don't be sad! I'm more grateful in the bigger picture. :)

Geary 05-06-2013 07:17 AM

Well, OK .. since you twist my arm ;)
Anyone who knows the Maalaea surf break is aware of how fast the wave is. So fast in fact, that few waves are actually made all the way through. Consequently, the main take-off spot utilizes only the last third of the wave, where the chances of "making it" are much higher. (At most surf breaks there's a huge pack of guys sitting outside and a few guys picking off smaller waves on the inside. At Maalaea it's reversed .. the huge pack sits inside, and anyone paddling out beyond the main take-off spot limits their chances of making the wave dramatically .. like way less than a 10% chance.)

A few of us sit far outside at Maalaea for more elbow room, realizing that we might not actually make a single wave that day. But every once in a while a magic one comes along, where one can actually make it through the "Pipeline" zone, all the way through the main pack of surfers, and then through the inside line up. This wave was one of those. Not only was I tubed for almost the entire wave, but it was also the unofficial nose-riding record for Maalaea, as witnessed by dozens and documented by the photographer. The moment that I remember most about the wave (hooting at two of my friends to please not take off) was captured by the photo .. and yes I made the wave, going quite a ways further and casually kicking out on the far inside. One of those magic days that I'll never forget.

Great story...worth the wait!SmileWavy

tevake 05-06-2013 09:55 AM

Cool story Geary!!
I moved to Maui for the windsurfing years ago, when I had it real bad and needed the fix. Ran a boat out of Maalaea while there, and can testify to the speed of that wave!!
Looks from the pics like your son is a chip off the old block.
Loved the vintage board collection, is the wood Vanieir koa? Beautiful.

Cheers Richard

Geary 05-06-2013 06:52 PM

I had to grab that koa board, Richard. It's the only one up there without any history, but it's so beautiful, it rounds out the display. (I've been searching for that photo of BK styling it in '67 San Diego, but no luck so far ..)

Baz 05-06-2013 06:59 PM

Wow Geary....impressive & amazing story!!!!!!!

Thanks for all your postings...I really like that pic of you on the nose...classic!
