Yo Shaun,
Nice shirts - they remind me of one I have....at some point later I will post this panel sweatshirt I received back in the 80's from South Africa that is pretty cool. I think you will dig it. It's an retro style but very cool, IMHO.... Sorry about the hip but good for you - you got a great attitude. :) |

Looks like snow surfing fun at Mt. Bachelor this weekend .. any OR Pelicans going?

Sigh. It was a perfect day. They even had an awesome live band at base camp. Going back next weekend. :) |
Northwest chair of Mt Bachelor backside was like untouched back country the past few days:

You know, it's funny, I hate snow until I see it in the mountains, in nature. It is so beautiful. I love the way it covers everything, making everything soft and rounded. And how it makes everything so quiet.
Beautiful pics, Geary. I chatted with a lot of the dudes on the chairlifts. At least 75% were surfers too. Talked skateboarding too. We are all crossovers. Spent the morning snowboarding, spending the night waxing my surfboard. :) Want to get out to San Diego next month. At least that's the goal. |
Variables with Kimi Werner (Patagonia Surfing)
I thought that the folks interested in boarding (liquid & frozen) would have an appreciation (and a bit of awe) for Kimi's world:
"In Variables, Patagonia spearfishing ambassador Kimi Werner strives to find her place in the ecosystem. She treads the line between predator and prey - eventually discovering balance in an unlikely place." <iframe src="http://player.vimeo.com/video/62831314" width="400" height="300" frameborder="0" webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen></iframe> |

Fellas, I finally tried to put my new fin on my board and my fin box is too tight. Can't get the back end of my fin in. What should I do? I don't want to force it. And I don't think there are any surf shops to help me. :( Maybe I will email somebody. |
Hey Tweeze. Shoot us a couple of pics so we can see what's up. it May just be that a bit of sanding on the fin will do the trick. Got to be sure that the fin and box are the same system and meant to go together.
Do I hear San Diego calling you? Love that pic with your mom. Cheers Richard |

And thanks about the pic. She's a good mom. |
Its a good idea to tape the fin right at the point where it sticks out of the box so the sanding is just in the area meant to be inside the box. Sand just till it will go in with some effort. Don't want it to be loose in the box. If there is split pin in the fin you may be able to tap it to one side so you can sand easily. Then recenter the pin..
The older fin type of fins could be slid fore and aft for tuning. This often needs the fin to be rotated out of the box except for the corner with the pin to be able to move it. Then when rotated back into the box it becomes very tight. Hope this helps rether than confuses the issue. Cheers Richard |
Is it an FCS fin system ?
Make sure the screw/s is/are turned out. Don't sand them unless it is an old school slide system. |

I picked up a new wet suit this winter - and I got to say - I was warmer in that suit in the water than I was on land. Didn't want to take it off - now I know how a seal feels...like having a second skin - and fur. - Rip Curl Flash Bomb (with the wooly, fast dry lining) No - this is not an advert - just what a difference from even a couple years ago. Still hate wearing the boots and gloves though. Water is up to 50 here now WOOhoo - |

Gee Tweez - that was way back on page 12 - that's not new any more - Ha
That is a great looking log. I still ride a gun and a short board but around here in "bikini weather" (NOT me !) the waves are mostly longboard waves. I love how everything seems slower on a longboard, more relaxed and flowing and cerebral. You are going to enjoy that one. Post some shots of the system, I'm sure Richard or Baz will be able to see what's up with it. |

Nice duck dive going on there Milt.

Feeling a little liberated ? |
Oh Shaun if I wasn't so comfortable with my body you sure know how to make a girl feel good. Green font by the way.
And yes JCF, I do feel liberated. But I wasn't naked.;) |
Who doesn't like chocolate cupcakes?!

NICE pics, Tweeze!
Good to see you stylin'! ;) |
Nice spring conditions for snowboarding Tweeze. My buddies and I used to ski in shorts and shirtless in the spring at Mammoth. We would hit chair 5 for fast cruising and then one wise guy would challenge us to hot dog the ridges... bad idea. It gets real crusty up there in spring and I went down once and shredded my back to hamburger. You could probably see the skid marks for a month after. I prefer to wear clothes now. :D
When you get to SD, there are a lot of nice longboard spots around depending on the swell and direction. La Jolla Shores, Calumet, Torrey Pines, Trails to name a few. San Diego County - Surfing in San Diego County, United States of America - WannaSurf, surf spots atlas, surfing photos, maps, GPS location It's been a while since I went surfing as my kids ran off with all my boards. I do miss those days when the only thing to worry about was that next big set coming in. |

And thanks for the info about SD! |

Oh, and I got a little bit of snow rash. They convinced me to try a couple of little hills/jumps. Yeah, ate it. But I looked cool doing it. :) |

Tweezers, your surfing is getting better all the time :) |
Richard, what do you think of that crazy wave at Velzland. Scarry. Many years ago I was staying at a camping ground in Haliewa but the swell was only about one meter. I walked up to Velzyland and it was breaking head height and half again. Phew it must have been shallow :( I went to Waimea Bay and had a body surf as it was only a tiny crumbly beach break that day, but at least I can say I've body surfed the mighty Waimea Bay.
|
Hey Bill, I'm sure Geary knows much more about the Oahu N. Shore spots than I. But it is really surprising how on certain swells, one or another spot really catches the swell and is half again or twice the size as other spots. It can really surprise you.
Love the shot in Hana, that was my kind of spot, out of the way with a handfull of locals that surfed there and were happy to share with a new face. Lanai is another spot I had some exceptional sessions at, big fun with Da Bros. there. Cheers Richard |
Funny you mention Lanai, Richard .. On southwest swells, my buddy and I would scoot over from Maui on my waverunner, with boards, extra fuel, and a beer cooler strapped tightly onto our rescue sled. We'd spend all day lounging on the southeast side beach, with not a single other person in the water or on the beach. Great memories ..

Surf's up in Teahupoo! That is just the biggest, fattest, hollow wave I have ever seen.
Huge swell at Teahupoo sends surf media into overdrive | GrindTV.com |
Nice post on that video Cajundady, I overheard a conversation in the hardware store the other day With Terry Chun (one of the best surfers you've never heard of) saying he had just got back from Tahiti and that this swell was great but many guys got raked and really busted up. Can't imagine trying to surf that wave in a rabid crowd. Really, can't imagine trying to surf that wave anyway.
Geary, I used to stop in at Lanai on my annual migration between the Big Island and Kauai, would stop in and anchor at white Manele and just paddle into the lineup. Then later on would have to hot foot it from the harbor over to the beach. Friendly folks there at that time, lots of hanakapila (jam sessions, playing music)at the harbor after work in the pineapple fields. Get the lines out, start afire to cook the fish, and bust out the Uks and guitars. Hoota, good times. Cheers Richard |
