A heads up for those that might like to see some good contest surfing today.
The second crown of the triple crown is on today in very good conditions at sunset bch. The first crown was won at Haleiwa by Hanalei's own Sebastian Ziets this sets the stage for a classic showdown between the touring pros, and the Hawaiian seeded competitors. They have run a couple of heats now. And the conditions are a little inconsistent, with a few really good ones coming thru once in a while. If the wind stays light it should get better as the tide goes down.
As I mentioned earlier the local seeds have a chance to showcase their skills on the world stage with this event. Especially at sunset familiarity with the break is crucial. Tough challenge for the tour pros to out surf those guys that surf there all the time. Should be some great action thru the day! Cheers Richard |
Very cool Richard.....thanks! :)
|
Evan Geiselman, from NSB, in white jersey out in his heat right now....
|
Evan just took one on the head after a very aggressive second top turn.
The young guns are going for extreme moves that aRE RARE to complete in these conditions. Gonna score high if they start to string them together. Rich |
Thanks Rich.

Sure thing Bill! Wind just came on onshore but still some good rides being had.

That's a challenging wave with all the undulations....
|
Very challenging with the backwash bumps causing the lip of the wave to pulse, lots of the guys were blowing up on the top turns or while trying to make the drop after the top turn. With the exceptional power of the waves at sunset reef that kind of maneuver is low percentage for most, then add the bump and it time to tone down the amplitude of the moves with an eye to making the waves. But it sure is fun to watch them going for it like that.
The swell dropped here noticeablely toward the end of the day, and its going to be coming more from the northeast so probably humbug for tomorrow. There is a new swell coming mon/tue so be ready for more action then! A young surfer guy came over late this mourning to pick up some furniture I was selling on C L, He had been out at the beach just under my new condo in Princeville. and saw Laird towing in on his foil board on the outside bombs. The guy broke his board into three pieces. Pay to play I guess. Funny how many guys think they have to ride competition weight boards that won't last long enough for to even learn the feel of the thing. Cheers Richard |
surf is great in socal right now, heading out again in the morning.
just saw chasing mavericks. a little cheesy but i loved it. great message for kids. |
I haven't seen the Mavericks movie yet, will keep an eye out for it.
The Sunset contest is on again today. A new WNW swell is here, but there is a bit of morning sickness on it right now. First heat was won by Sebastian Ziets from Kauai, I don't know him personally but he sounds like a fun loving carefree sort of guy. This success is a break thru for him in his surfing career. The swell is supposed to come up thru the day, Hopefully the conditions will clean up. Kieren Perrow surfed really strong in the second heat. It is amazing what this level of surfers can make happen in this sort of stuff. Enjoy, Rich |
Watching right now Rich.....some great surfing!
Thank you, Baz :) |
WOW, what a weird day at the contest! I'm just now watching the taped replay of the last of the sunset contest. Dropping swell, still good performance waves to be had. Not classic sunset power.
All of the top seeds getting axed by the surf gods. Not out surfed, just no waves for the top contenders. Slater, no good waves to score on, out. John john , out. O Brian comes in five minutes early (mistimed the heat)to watch Ace Buchen score the wave to take second and eliminate him. WOW. In form surfer of the event Adam Melling! Break out performance of the contest continues to be Sebastian Ziets. Into the finals, almost took the win. consolidates first place in the triple crown. Any one here get to see the final day? On to the pipe contest, Saturday. Cheers Richard |

Great links there Baz, both classic and yesterday's highlights! The conditions look to be good today also, a bit more wind this morning here, but N. shore Oahu turns trades into offshore winds.
Thanks for posting! I was at the condo most of the day with no computer, but did have the contest on the TV. They do use some good music in the broadcast. Could be good today!! Cheers Richard |
G'day Richard,
Watched some of it today and enjoyed some great tube action - good to see backdoor working for us regular footers! A lot of those tubes were pinching a bit I guess due to the swell direction. Some good size though and very competitive! Cheers, Baz |
Pipe finals on today!
Slater is in the first heat! Cheers Richard |
