Some surfing drama (and rather melodramatic acting by some) from an old TV show. Makaha is the location.

Classic old footage, John. As a youth, I may have surfed Makaha more than any other surf spot, aside from Pokai (3 miles from Makaha) where my grandparents country home was.
From what I can see, this early film shows a wave or two at pipeline, some scenes at Maile Beach (the old Maile, before the surf break was destroyed by the Army corp of Engineers), surf footage at Makaha featuring (I believe) Phil Edwards, and a rescue scene at Makua Beach (8-10 miles past Makaha). The worst wipe-out I ever had was at Makaha Bowl in 1960. It was spectacular enough that Wally Forseith approached me on the beach .. a big deal for a young surfer dude. |

The Wedge is an amazing break .. one of the CA breaks that I've visited, but never had the opportunity to ride. But I did watch the birth of modern sand sliding take place there.
Although first conceived of by Hawaiians many, many years ago, the Californians took the Paipo to a whole new level. My wife & I watched a young Hawaiian girl ripping the shore break at Sandy Beach (Oahu) a few weeks ago .. amazing timing and talent .. we could have watched her for hours. Sorry, no pics .. |

More footage of Propper - along with another local legend - Mimi Monroe - who lives just across the inlet in Daytona - met her at a surf party a few years ago.
