Baz, thanks for the post. I am sure anyone who paddled out in the 80's, 90's and into the 2000's owes a hardy thanks to Mr. Clark. Since I wrecked my bike in Aug of 2015 I have not had the shoulder strength to paddle out. Each month I am closer and closer to the point where I can. Each trip out to my garage to work on a car or bike I see the stash of nearly 20 boards dating back to the 80's. There are plenty of others I have passed onto others to enjoy. I would bet every one was made from a Clark blank. So thank you Mr. Clark enjoy your retirement, er I mean your current endeavor. Thank you for building the foundation of the sport we all love.

It was 3 to 4 foot and clean as a whistle here yesterday. The only problem was the 22 degree air temp and the freezing ocean temp. As a younger man, heck yaa, at 52 with a busted wing, I will wait for my time which will come again.

Hey guys...you're welcome - happy to have a place to share info with fellow travelers!

Speaking of travel...here's a few pics from a trip I made along with a core gruppe of buddies back in 2000 - to attend a mutual friend's wedding.

These pics are from a shop we stopped at - but for the life of me I can't remember which one. They had a truck load of blanks from Clark in back so I took a few pics...

Like you guys stated....Clark was an institution....and a man we all worshiped in our own way for everything he did for our passion.

It looks like that could be McConnell's Fullerton shop before the move to HB, or possibly Stewart's in San Clemente.

Neither of those ring a bell, Craig. I'll try to find out and get back.

Florida's Last Beach Bum Lived in a Van Until He Died Surfing

Dana Brown surfed every day except Saturday, based on his strict interpretation of the Bible.

VERY long piece and worth reading.

Quote:
Dana cared for his dad every day, carrying him when he couldn't walk. Even after George was diagnosed with advanced heart failure, Dana remained convinced his father would not die. But he slipped away early one March morning in 2016, with Dana beside his hospital bed. Shocked, Dana traded watches with him. He believed he'd see his father again in the afterlife, and they would trade back.

Soon after, dozens of local surfers headed to 16th Street for a "paddle out" — a surfing ritual in which surfers form a circle in the water to remember one of their own.

The Browns held a small, informal funeral beneath a pavilion, where Dana stood and spoke, at times tearfully, about George's last months. "They were all telling me that he was going to die, but I didn't believe them," he said. "I didn't believe them until the very end."

In a wooded cemetery, the Brown sons dug a hole in the ground and buried their dad themselves. Dana planted a garden on top of the grave and visited every day. Sometimes he'd ask the cemetery owner if he could spend the night. On his Facebook page, he wrote that he missed his dad "something awful."

"Dana without his father — it was hard to imagine how this was going to work out," surfer Tom Goffinet says.

He tried to get a job as a lifeguard. He started a campaign to run for president and took to YouTube to lay out his platform: protecting the rights of the unborn, rooting out corruption in the Federal Reserve, cleaning up Wall Street, and bringing the Bible into the classroom. He added more plants to the garden blossoming on his dad's grave. He found work as an adventure guide in Cocoa Beach. Finally, in September, he packed up and headed west. His destination: Huntington Beach.

"Everybody has a dream beach," Morelle says, "and that was his."

Hey, Laird Hamilton is promoting that motorized skateboard thingy. He calls it "Earth Surfing". Don't be so closed minded

Silver Strand....My closest break, and where I go on my sponge board to get barreled.

18' today at Ventura Point! Eat your heart out Florida boys!

1:30:26 PM
This report updated Saturday, January 21 at 12:30PM
10-15 ft- 2-3 times overhead occ. 18 ft.

Actually, not as good as it reads. HUGE but choppy and confused swell. Decided it wasn't worth getting cold and worked. Tomorrow is supposed to clean up with some morning off-shore winds. I'm waxed and waiting.

Magic Seaweed reports 7'-10' today and 4'-6' tomorrow at C Street.

Air and water temp both 58 degrees...brrr......

Meanwhile it's 2'-3' and offshore winds at Ponce Inlet with 79 degree air and 70 degree water.

Call me a wimp but I'll take the warmer water.....the warmer air.....and the smaller cleaner waves.

I'm beginning to think like you Baz. The thought of pulling on a 5/4mm wetsuit this morning for Victory at Sea storm condition didn't sound so good. Predicted to be cleaner tomorrow. 4'-6' and clean is worth getting cold for.

If tomorrow is better conditions, I'll take a couple pics before I go out.

RIP Surfing Magazine (1964-2017)

Quote:
After more than 50 years in publication, Surfing magazine’s final glossy chapter is coming to a close, ending the reign of a goliath in surf media and signaling the imminent and cold, “Print Is Dead,” future.

Rumors had been circling the industry for some weeks that the magazine was on its last legs. There was word of cuts to quarterly circulation and an increased focus online. But finally, on Monday, the news broke – the magazine was done. Eulogies flooded through social media with surfers paying tribute to the fallen mag which gave them life.

Over the decades of Surfing’s lifespan, the magazine specialized in hyper-modern waveriding trends. They were a voice for the youth, the punks, the innovators. The place to go for a fix of no-bull**** surf clips, an outlet for the “core” surfer. But because of this single-track focus, and the resultant exclusivity in audience, the magazine became overshadowed by its forefather – the industry original since 1960, Surfer magazine. An insider tells us that a few key players at Surfing will move down the hall to Surfer – both publications are owned by The Enthusiast Network – in lieu of severance packages.

As a surf media outlet ourselves, the news about Surfing feels like a death in the family. Sure, they were the opposition, but it was a cordial competition. More of a sibling rivalry. Many of our own had worked at the magazine in the past. So, we’re sad to see them go.

Surfing magazine is survived by photographers, writers, surfers, and of course, the countless fans. Including us.

To get some insight on the legacy left behind by Surfing and what it means for the fragile surf industry, media or otherwise, we caught up with surf historian, Matt Warshaw.

How important was Surfing in surf culture through the early years?

SURFER needed a foil, a competitor, and Surfing provided that. The first year or two, that was the main thing. Surf Guide was maybe the best surf mag of all in 1964, right before Surfing launched. Surf Guide snuck up on SURFER and for a little while it jumped ahead. But John Severson power-played the **** out of Surf Guide, and basically vaporized it. Vaporized it, and stole their best guys. God, Severson was gnarly. Anyway, by ’65 Surfing was the only real challenger—but it was a distant second.
(go to link above for rest of interview)

The last issue before word of Surfing's untimely end made the rounds, featuring a profile on Eric and Evan Geiselman* leading up to the premier of a film on the brothers. It was projects like this, profiling innovative surfers, that Surfing became known for over the years. Photo: Courtesy Surfing Magazine

Whilst browsing the Aussie music vids this gem came up.

Which begs the question....is Tom Curren the best surfer to ever come out of California?
