I wonder how many of these vulnerabilities are mandated by the NSA, only to be discovered by others later...

What really stinks is Discover Card used to have a way to generate a one-time use card number. You didn't have to worry about your card number being stolen on-line. It ended Sept 7th - just in time for SSL to get hacked!

I've been called an old curmudgeon for never using paypal, not giving a card number on line..
so I'm an old curmudgeon...guess in this case, that's okay.

I have some low dollar credit cards I use for on-line transactions, which limits the possible damage.

I just had my cc info stolen online. The bank caught the fraud in two transactions and alerted me. The card was cancelled and all unauthorized transactions were cancelled. I has my new card in 24 hours.
I'm not downplaying the fact that SSL being hacked is a big deal, but some of you worry about worst case scenarios way too much |

We have had our car numbers compromised multiple times, and we are very careful. Every time, the CC company has been on it, we have lost nothing, and got new CC numbers right away. Yes, it was a pain because we have an ass load of automated services using those numbers, but it wasn't the end of the world.....

My debit card has been compromised twice. It cost me ZERO dollars just some time. My CC was stolen once when I bought tires on-line. I called the major tire company that we all know and placed the order on the telephone. No internet. Once again zero cost to me. Now I have a feature that my CC company will send me a text message if they see unusual purchases. I can text back a yes or no and if it is a no the account is frozen and a new card is on the way to me.

Got one CC# stolen once and used by someone to buy airline tickets in the Ukrane or something like that. Disputed it online, closed and no charge to me - new card # issued. Bada-bing, bada-boom. No problem. Apparently mine was simply in a large batch of #'s that got compromised and the same bunch of people went on a spending binge for hundreds of thousands of dollars on all kinds of stuff...)

When my Debit card number got stolen they traced it to some breach at a clearing house. There was a line of people at my credit union getting new cards. Fortunately all I had to do was go to the credit union and they handed me a new card that would be valid the next day.

I had a card number stolen once. Even with zero liability, the time and hassle factor stinks. One time use card numbers fixed that.

There are far more ways to get a CC # stolen during the normal course of your day.
