I think anyone would have to be crazy to save a hundred dollars and not buy an iPad, but that's just me. Everyone should know that I'm a fanboy by now

I looked at the tablets available 6 months ago and decided on the iPad2 and have not regretted that decision.

As others have said, it depends on what she wants it for. For most of those things, the iPad is better, at a few hundred dollars more. So, do you want to tell her she isn't worth the few hundred bucks?

I've got a couple of G-Tabs, a Motorola Xoom (plus a few Tegra and Arm dev boxes).

They are fine mostly because they did not cost me anything, work perk.

If I had to pay for them out of pocket I would not have them.

If I had a need for a personal use tablet I'd spring for the iPad.

When you find out the hardware manufacturer has no interest in keeping the OS on your device current.

A few months ago I was happy to see the ICS announcement as it signaled an end to the fragmentation issues plaguing the platform.

The way it seems to be shaking out leads me to believe very few devices released in the last six months will see an ICS upgrade and forget about anything older.

If they made a 7" tablet, I would consider it. I have tried the different sizes and 7" is the right size.

Think about what you want to do with it. I don't know about other than the iPad, but you can't edit Word or Excel documents or really create much with it other than email, surfing and watching movies. You can't connect a camera directly, and you can't load pics to PP with one directly. Some say you can with the tapatalk app.

Just saw this today:

Amazon slumps on Kindle Fire worries - MSN Money

I own an Ipad 2 since it came out. I still view it as a large ipod. Fun for games, viewing movies (when able!), and checking email. Took it to Europe this fall and used it extensively there. Is it needed? Hardly. I still prefer any lengthy browsing with any laptop. The lack of a mouse is not replaced by having to pinch and zoom to enable page changes, and even when it does I still prefer IE and windows to Safari. Apple was ahead of everyone else in convincing us that we had to have something that we didn't need. And I don't mean that in a derogatory way.

My netbook lost all its smoke a few weeks ago..... So I bought a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1

I have found apps that let me create Word or Excel files can open and edit *.docxs, *.xls etc... can save them as pdfs....

And it was a free app from Amazon Market...

I have toyed with Gen 1&2 Ipads... The Galaxy tab just works.... maybe it helps that I have an inner geek in me such that I cant figure ways around road blocks...

But the Galaxy costs the same as the Ipad....

What road blocks are you referring to...in the context of an iPad user?

Maybe I should have framed my response in that I don't know my way around Apple products or operating systems...I feel like I am that windows guy in the apple add LOL

I got the Samsung Galaxy Tab as a sit on the couch check the net device...

Then found without much difficulty.... that I can use it for those moments when I lose my resolve and check my work e-mails on a weekend...

I can open and edit Word or Excel files... I can convert them to pdf's when I am finished....

This past thanksgiving I was checking out my nieces Ipad..I just feel that Samsung has met or bettered, The bar set by the Ipad..

Actually Pages will open/edit word docs. And QuickOffice will as well (and I think there are other 3rd party solutions).

App Store - QuickofficeŽ Pro

Plenty of ways to create things on the iPad. Just gotta get an app for it...

We'll see. You still have carriers and individual hardware manufacturers in the loop with their skins so unless they change their ways you still will have a delay, or in many cases, never be able to upgrade. Plenty of devices have been orphaned with a single OS release. That is one downside to the Android ecosystem.

We looked at the iPad2, but ended up with an Android-based with a keyboard and mouse dock(16 hour battery when together). It also has a built in USB port for flash drives and the pc-compatability should be seamless.

A major drawback is the memory refresh. It takes a second or so to scroll down to the bottom of a webpage. That is unacceptable in this day and age, IMO.
The Android organizational GUI is still very quirky and beta.

The store only sold Android tablets with hardware that's tailor-made to work with a specific ISP. (wtf?)
The Apple did have an inexpensive ISP plan with it, but after our previous negative experience with trying to purchase mp3s from iTunes, we decided not to get locked into the "Apple World".....from which there is no escape.

One essential thing to do is to turn off Autoupdate/Autorefresh on running apps!
Supposedly we used our 5GB allowance in only 11 days while just basic surfing without videos/etc.
That was a bit of a shock.

I've got the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and so far no real issues. Any glitches have been software related. Same dimensions and weight as the iPad, it's NOT apple (a big +), and tons of software. I don't know what anyone says regarding issues with he OS, I've had none. I use it for email, games, calendar, etc.. Nice integration to Google. Charge it once every 48 hours.

I think the Kindle Fire will come around (gen II) and lower pricing in the tablet market. They are selling at a loss knowing they will sell content, similar to the cell phone market.

I'd get a super thin notebook. A MacAir, or one of the coming UltraBooks using Windows 8, perhaps one with a pivoting screen that makes it convertible into a tablet.

+1
Wish the tablet / PC I have was indeed thinner but wouldn't trade it for any exclusive tablet. Although I can easily convert the laptop to tablet mode and type, it is irritating. Half the screen is used up for my fat fingers when used that way.
