just out of curiosity are you guys that i specifically aiming for weight loss doing any weight or resistance training? Reason i ask is along with the fat you are burning up muscle and since muscle is more dense then fat you might be giving yourself a false security of seeing your body weight go down and thinking your AOK.

Ramathorn 12-20-2012 06:35 PM

Oh im clocked in at 176lbs with a measured body fat percentage of 14 making my lean body mass of 151lbs. So lugging around 25lbs of fat, blah. Shooting to get into 5-6%BF for the majority of 2013!

I run and bike plenty, so my legs and heart are strong. I do swim for upper body, but no weights. Personally I know I lost upper body muscle, but that's fine - I want to be a runner, not a weightlifter and lugging a big arm or chest muslce around is only gong to slow me down.

It is a good point not to forget about muscle. I even heard that if you aren't careful going on a radical diet sans exercise, you can lose heart muscle, which can be dangerous.

I am doing okay on my weight - flat at 178 - the holidays aren't over yet. I am afraid a couple pounds will have to come off for next years target.

Speaking of next year? Who is running the challenge? (Not that any of us ever came through with the stats!).

181.8

McLovin 12-26-2012 09:43 AM

I've been weight lifting 5 days a week for the past 8 years, which I've continued through this process. So I'm not losing any muscle.

I haven't weighed for a few days (I only have a scale at work) but I feel like I've put on some weight on Dec 24 and 25. Those were really long days, multiple loooong parties with a lot of food and booze constantly around. I've been keeping up the workout routine, but still . . .

I'm afraid to weigh in today!

I'll go to the gym this afternoon and weigh in, and then again tomorrow for the last Thursday report of 2012.

I looked back at the beginning of this thread, and it looks like a lot of people dropped out!

Hopefully someone runs it again for 2013. It would be cool to have a spreadsheet with everyone on it, with start weights, and then updated once a week. I know the "peer pressure" of reporting every Thurs. has helped me get through lots of times I've been tempted to not exercise, or indulge in things I shouldn't.

Ramathorn 12-26-2012 06:48 PM

I think for 2013 it should be more of a fitness challenge than a weight loss challenge.

McLovin 12-27-2012 01:11 PM

Meh.

190.2 (11/1/12)
189.6 (11/6/12)
189.8 (11/8/12)
189.4 (11/13/12)
188.0 (11/15/12)
186.8 (11/19/12)
185.4 (11/21/12)
187.8 (11/26/12)
187.0 (11/29/12)
184.8 (12/6/12)
183.8 (12/13/12)
183.4 (12/20/12)
184.8 Today

I can't say I'm surprised.

I like the idea of a fitness challenge combined with a weight loss challenge.

Suppose it were something like this - this is going to be over the top, maybe, but just to start the discusion - each person states his beginning height, weight, waist inches, age, resting pulse, BP, bench press, time for 5 mile running, time for 50 mile cycling, time for 1 mile swimming, and his goals to reach during 2013. Mocking and other positive feedback helps us all establish goals that are ambitious but not silly. And then we go at it with weekly check-ins for weight plus whatever else we have to report. I think before and after pics can be optional as before.

So, my goals might be something like: 170#, 30", press 250#, 40 min 5 miles, 2:30 50 miles, dunno 1 mile, for example, and I'm not by any means making those my actual goals. I might better give myself 2 hours to run 1 mile.

this year was bad...i failed miserably. :( No excuses, just gotta get my ass in gear this year!

vash 01-01-2013 03:11 PM

i didnt gain, or lose.

but i just did do my longest jog of my life today. and i felt great!! on the inside, i am much better. blood pressure down..cholesterol down. good cholesterol up..blood sugar kicking butt..

i am in for 2013!! i have a high elevation Sierras hunt coming up in August..you are welcome to come along George. deer in the Sierras..bring the long bow! this should cut my year in half.

aigel 01-01-2013 07:24 PM

I am back from a vacation - and it probably had terrible results despite 10 miles jogging logged. I will just say I made 178 - last reading for 2012. That's 3 pounds shy of the goal with over 20 lost off my peak weight.

I love the idea of making this a fitness + weight loss challenge for 2013. I have several running goals for timed events and also need to become a better swimmer - plus another 15 pounds to lose.

We have had a pretty poor track record of record keeping for the thread "owners" so for keeping track of weight and fitness goals, I like what MCL did in his last posts - just keep your own stats / own graph and post them.

What do you think? Anyone care to start the 2013 Challenge, or have I missed it? We should probably weigh in on Monday?

A sierra bow hunt sounds great Vash - I will hit you up on the details. August is usually a dead month for me - would be nice to add an event! 2012 is also another year of A31 tag soup!

Cheers,

George

Ugh. I lost 3-4 lb by summer, then gained in the last few months, to end the year 7 lb heavier than I started. I can feel it too, in my clothes, on the bike, in the mirror.

I'm actually a bit puzzled about why I gained so much.

I think each person can keep track of their own stats, it is too hard a task for one person to do it for everyone.

Let's weigh-in weekly, starting this coming Monday.

aigel 01-01-2013 09:15 PM

Sounds good JYL (aside from your weight gain!) - Please start a new thread and let's kill this one!!! :)

A friend of mine was diagnosed as hypothyroid this year. He started taking a small dose of thyroid medication. Has regained his energy, is no longer sleeping as much, and has lost 20 lbs without any change to his diet and exercise program. I hate him of course, but hmm . . .

Ok, I will close it out for me:

13.3 lbs lost over the year

Here the graph for the time that I got serious:

I think you'd rather have a well working thyroid if you had a choice. That said, you can always have yourself evaluated in detail, if you think you have a gland problem.

What kills me are the results old guys get when they dose themselves up to testosterone levels of a 20 year old. That's tempting too, except for the football size prostate you may end up with 5 years later.

Sorry Everyone. Time got away from me and so did my weight. I feel really bad for not following through plus gaining weight. I did drop 6 lbs in the last two months but I am still up from the start of this journey. Please forgive me for dropping the ball. Thanks. Kim.

jyl 01-02-2013 11:09 AM

Kim- no forgiveness needed, but many thanks given!

I think having one person try to track and tabulate all the data is just too much, especially for an entire year. You made a great effort and the 2012 challenge was motivating and entertaining for all whether there were pretty charts or not. Your idea of running the challenge all year really made a difference IMO.

Join the 2013 challenge! See the other thread which I hope will be stickied eventually.

12own911 01-02-2013 12:08 PM

Already tracking the other one but need everyone's final weigh in to give a prize for 2012. I still have the chart and can add the final weighin to it.

Everyone post final weight for 2012!

jyl 01-02-2013 12:31 PM
