Craigslist SCORE!

I was needing front tires for by daily driver Ford F-150. My toe-in was out of spec so the outer edge of the tires were wearing premature. I priced them on-line (Tire Rack, etc) and a few local places. Then I thought why not try craigslist as people upgrade their trucks with larger tires all the time, maybe I would get lucky and get the left overs.

Well as luck would have it, I scored big time. Four tires with 5,000 miles (who knows for sure) still mounted on the same factory wheels as my truck for $300.00. I emailed him and offered $275 and he accepted. These tires new are $159.00 on-line plus shipping and mount/balance/disposal/tax. I figure a total for four would be $800+ or so. If I sell off my two good tires and scrap my existing wheels I could get back about $75. I thinking I could net out paying $200 for a $800 tire package.

Color me happy ..............

Sitting pretty on new shoes ........

Not to pee in your cornflakes, but did you check the date codes on the tires to make sure they aren't old?

Cheers,

G

Good score. Used tires are absolutely the way to go, IME. 75% of life for 50% of the price.

That's what we usually do on our trucks. You'd be amazed how many idiots buy a new dodge with factory alloys, and Michelin tires and are willing to let go of the set for 5 bills.

I wish I could find a set of 235-85-16 E-loads cheap. Its always nice when your size is used on a ton of vehicles...not in my case.

Tires came off a truck newer than mine. My corn flakes remain dry.

I found new in the box Hummer H2 rims (the guy hated the chrome rims on his H2, ordered these, but traded the H2 on an old Vett before mounting) for $100, and the guy was only a few miles from my house.. How could I go wrong, just add rubber..

LOL! That's good - I would be scared to drive a high center of gravity vehicle at highway speeds on anything that's older than 5-6 years.

I've bought many tires on Craigslist, there's lots of deals to be had with some searching.

This is one item that is really prevalent on CL. I've had good luck buying and selling tires but sellers definitely lie about date codes and condition of tires sometimes.

I upgraded my Jeep with 3000 miles on it. Had a hard time selling the stock ones. Waited till a snow storm was predicted and they sold in 15 minutes. Guy came @ 10:00 pm to get them.

I found a set of wheels for a Buddy'd Disco on CL, $300, turned out to not only but the style he wished his Disco had, but very good tires that were only a year old (as it turned out, he was about to order new tires the week I sent him the link)

I sell tons of tires on CL.... never bought any though.

Cars with mis-matched tires, or cheap-brand tires, or feathered tires but deep tread..... I always just put a set of four new tires on. I can always sell the tires, fully disclosed, for a disproportionate amount of money. Some people have $200 for a set of used 75% tires, but not $300 for brand new ones.

Because I have wholesale accounts and substantial discounts, by the time things are done it costs me $150-250 to have four brand-new name-brand mounted and balanced tires to replace the cheapo off-brand mismatched 50-75% tires that were on there. I feel I recoup my money selling the car, but that's hard to know for sure.

I would never buy a used set of tires unless they were true new car take-offs. Wheels are a completely different story.

When we had our JK Wrangler, we bought the "X" with the base wheel/tires. The tires the X came with are absolutely a joke on a 4x4. But alot of people will buy a brand new Jeep, take it to the tires store and buy a whole new set of bigger/badder wheels/tires. Even the dealers do this. Kept an eye out at the local tire shops and Craigslist. Sure enough a set of brand new, less than 20 miles, set of Rubicon wheels/tires came through. Picked them up for a couple of hundred dollars.

The warning about the date codes is important. In our case, they were the new factory set so no worries there.

Same here, just scored two semi-trailer tires on C-L for $50 each. Good Bridgestones that were well worth three times that price.

Nice! I've done the exact same thing a few times for my F150s. I re-sell the steel wheels cheap and keep the tires. I tried it again a couple months ago, but each time I looked at used tires, people were lying about the condition. The final straw was a 22 year old girl who told me that the tires were new because they were shiny and she only drives a few miles a day to school, so how could they not be new? They had about 1/32" tread remaining on them and I drove an hour and a half round trip to see them. I said screw it and bought new from my local tire guy. He sells for the same price as Tire Rack.
