Spoiling Fruit? Black Berry goes down, is Apple next?

Here is what Forbes writes:

Bye Bye BlackBerry. How Long Will Apple Last? - Forbes

Yes, but apple is in many other games, they could drop the smartphones and still survive.

Hate to say it, but the comparison is apples to oranges.

It's like comparing Wang dumb terminals to IBM PCs back in the 80's.

I've had a couple of blackberries and hated them. I've had a couple of android based phones and an iPad and love them.

Asinine comparison, and I'll cut the author some slack by thinking that he only put Apple in the title to get search hits. Very different companies with vastly different style and business models.

Why slack for that? Not very journalistic.

Re: Blackberry. It seems this defines the times. Throw away society. If it has to do with electronics or entertainment, it's all a flash in the pan. For those that have a land line at home, I bet your instruments are 10 years old. Why? They offer nothing but communication in the simplest form.

Cell phones change faster than clothes fashion.

Thats not a very well written article.

Blackberry didn't evolve with the times.

Below is a pict of the 2005 7000 series blackberry. If you compare it to a new blackberry, the new one is just smaller. Some features. Some options. Nothing inherently changed in the structures.

The best selling phone of 2005 was a Motorola rzer v3. Pictures below. It was a good phone for the day but doesn't compare to what we use now, with Droids, and Iphones.

I work in mobile support every day. We are in my company developing a app to allow people with smart phones to get there email securely though their existing phone. As soon as we get this into production I expect our blackberry use to drop in half in 3 years. I expect it to drop our blackberry used down to 20% of high in 6 years.

Blackberry had it made when it was the smart phones. Other company's came in and did what they did better and smarter. Rim could have made the iphone. They didn't and it might kill them.

My daughter has an Ipad and an Iphone. I have never used them but they may be ok. The Android I have is a PITA.

Apple's apps are the iphone and iPad's greatest strength. With the amount of money and effort people have invested in customizing their respective products, it gives Apple's users a huge disincentive to go anywhere else. BB just had e-mail going for them, once Apple gave consumers the web and e-mai,l BB was on its way down. In hindsight, an easy short.

There was an interesting article about BB co-CEO arguing about putting cameras as web browsers on their phones. They disagreed about it, showing how narrow minded they were.

My Razr was my favorite phone. I have an iPhone 4s now and it does a lot more, but it's bigger and heavier. I loved the size of the razr.
It's funny how my life has changed. Ten years ago I needed to know I was dressed and had my keys and wallet when I left the house. Now I have to make sure I have my wallet, keys, phone, and glasses. I thought life was supposed to get easier with all these innovations.

I still have a few RAZR phones, which I use for int'l. travel. They're great for getting a local SIM card instead of messing with my iPhone's SIM card or paying crazy int'l. to call from it. I'm due for a new company BB in June. I wonder what choices they'll give me.

I'm the only one at my work with a blackberry. Everyone has an iphone. Everyone.

I never jumped on the iphone bandwagon because I saw everyone glued to their phones entertaining themselves with their apps.
My thinking was that I needed to put my energy into my work and not buy into that app world, mesmerizing as it may be.
Will I join the fray. It's only a matter of phone contract expirations..

This. People still see Apple as a computer company, but their success lies in consumer electronics, not computers; they've remained a marginal presence there (5 or 6%, iirc). They make their billions on consumer gadgets and their cut of everything sold thru iTunes, which is almost pure profit since the others create almost all the content.

When GM was going down the tubes, did that mean Mercedes was bound to follow?

I think they have kind of let their computer business fall behind. I'm sure they are making more money on ios devices which would explain that.

Stupid comparison. Blackberry has been an inferior product for years, the iPhone sets the standard in most areas as well as leading in sales. I've had several Blackberries, the only thing they had going for them was a keyboard. Otherwise they had a counter-intuitive UI, mediocre graphics, and were generally buggy.

Once you take a sip of the Apple juice you will be converted. I never thought I would want a smart phone. My dad gave me his old original iPhone. I played with it without the phone activated. After a few weeks I changed over to it as my phone. Last year I bought a iPhone 4. My wife has a iPhone 4 and an iPad. She bought a Apple TV when I sent her a link to a web page about it.

I NEVER play games on my phone. I do use my email and I even send a few text messages. The camera is impressive.
