I can't believe it's not butter!

Sent to me. I don't know how true it is but it sounds pretty scary.

"Margarine was originally manufactured to fatten turkeys. When it killed the turkeys, the people who had put all the money into the research wanted a payback so they put their heads together to figure out what to do with this product to get their money back.
It was a white substance with no food appeal so they added the yellow coloring and sold it to people to use in place of butter. How do you like it? They have come out with some clever new flavorings....

DO YOU KNOW.. The difference between margarine and butter?
Read on to the end...gets very interesting!

Both have the same amount of calories.

Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams; compared to5 grams for margarine.

Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over eating the same amount of butter, according to a recent Harvard Medical Study.

Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in other foods.
Butter has many nutritional benefits where margarine has a few and only because they are added!
Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavors of other foods.

Butter has been around for centuries where margarine has been around for less than 100 years.

And now, for Margarine..
Very High in Trans fatty acids.
Triples risk of coronary heart disease ...
Increases total cholesterol and LDL (this is the bad cholesterol) and lowers HDL cholesterol, (the good cholesterol)

Increases the risk of cancers up to five times..

Lowers quality of breast milk

Decreases immune response.

Decreases insulin response.

And here's the most disturbing fact... HERE IS THE PART THAT IS VERY INTERESTING!

Margarine is but ONE MOLECULE away from being PLASTIC... and shares 27 ingredients with PAINT

These facts alone were enough to have me avoiding margarine for life and anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is added, changing the molecular structure of the substance).

Open a tub of margarine and leave it open in your garage or shaded area. Within a couple of days you will notice a couple of things:

* no flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it (that should tell you something)

* it does not rot or smell differently because it has no value ; nothing will grow on it. Even those teeny weeny micro-organisms will not a find a home to grow. Why? Because it is nearly plastic. Would you melt your Tupperware and spread that on your toast?"

snopes.com: Butter, Margarine and Heart Attacks

Get in the habit of running this sort of email through snopes or a similar fact-checking website.

I use butter, not margarine, for reasons of taste.

I have seen that same email. My rule of thumb is stuff like that sent via email is 95% BS. They never quote any real studies or evidence.

If margarine truly had no food value how could it possibly have the same calories as butter?

And the bit near the end about one molecule from plastic or paint is meaningless. On molecule is a big difference that can separate poison from harmless.

I have never cared for margarine, I prefer the real deal. But I don't use much of either.

We all know you live in Portland, but please.... Snopes is run by two liberal leaning people who have been time after time proven to be less than true much of the time.

Lets see some OTHER proof that has nothing to do with Snopes and then possibly we can get closer to the truth.

You are free to suggest your favorite fact-checking website.

Chain emails get posted here quite often. Some PPOTers routinely post chain-mail stuff - usually political in nature - without having any idea if it is true or false. When they are run through Snopes or similar fact-checking websites, those emails frequently turn out to be false. The original poster usually slinks away, never acknowledges having give the rest of us false information, which seems a bit weird to me - if I misled my friends, I'd express some regret about it.

This happens so often that I assume those posters - like you, Joe - don't have a fact-checking website that you use. If you do, then please point us to it.

Nothing is worse than a site that is slanted or not accurate. You do not know which one is correct or not. This is what has really hurt Snopes lately as more and more of their so called information has been proven to be worthless.

Either way, we eat butter, not margarine. Food should come from the ground, not a lab.

The best is deep fried cheese when it is deep fried in butter, and wrapped in bacon.

Regardless of what Snopes says or does not say, my position is that margarine and other trans-fats are NOT FOOD.

It is important to consider carefully the stuff you put into your body. Most peoples' diets today are very poor, and you can tell just by looking at those people.
