$500k would allow me to open the business I am currently planning without outside investors. I already wake up everyday and do what I want so I guess I'm conflicted.

Over one million. Anything less would go into investing, saving for kids' college, paying off my house, and retirement. After I felt like the future was secure, then I would have a little fun. Oh to dream.......

I would like to be a real millionare. My preference is a 1920's millionare (about $60M in todays money), but I'd accept being a 1960's millionare (about $30M in todays money).
A Million would not really change much, since invested these days it would not pay my existing lifestyle. To simply replace my income would require at least $5M invested semi-safely.

I think $100 million would do it for me. I could:
1. buy my own ecosystem like Doug Tompkins did (he started North Face & Sportiva; then "retired" to create a sort of national park in southern S. America by buying all the land down there), 2. design a car just like I want (real small like a Sprite, good balance, low power (300 hp should be plenty), and light weight (CF tub like the new McLaren - total wt. 1,000 lbs.) - needs 2 seats and room in back for the dog, 3. I'm not really into yachts but I admire that guy making one out of carbon fiber - he pushed the envelope - wasn't it Larry Ellison? (Oracle CEO), 4. build my own freeking spaceship like Virgin Atlantic CEO Branson did, or 5. build a giant lift for my car collection and piss off a lot of people in OT. or maybe I'd need a billion or more... could do a Gates or Buffett thing for medical issues, maybe. |

$120k would get my house paid off, credit cards paid off, and the 356 restored.

I think I could get off the treadmill, and basically semi-retire if I had about 250K. I would still work, but only because I would want to , not because I have to.
50k would probably help me blast down the few doors that I have been unable to open thus far, but I would still be a working fool.

hmmm. I have zero debt, have a good bit saved up already, and would like to put a large down payment on a house.
I would be happy with 40K. That would allow me to put 50% down on a house.

All I need in life is enough money to send my kids to a good school, give my daughter a nice wedding and enough to retire on without being a burden to anyone else.
So $10,000,000, college for 2 is expensive.

$200k would be a good number. I'd pay cash for a house somewhere remote and start living it up. If I paid cash for the house I could live off of an average wage and not have pressure to make a high salary. As it is a career change is pretty much impossible without a major change in lifestyle.

If I had buzillions of dollars, I would post questions like this on various forums. Really good, sincere responses would get PM'd and those posters would be taken care of
![]() Wonder if I would really do that?

The magic number is 40K. That would let me clear out the loose debt and quit my job. I've got a business I'm starting - leaving the existing job would let me have a more normal work life and therefore, a more normal life. With those bills paid, I could get the business running without the abject terror of not being able to pay the bills or the unfair burden on Steve to pay them for me.
So. 40K. angela

I need enough to free me up to do what I want when I want. I already have cash sitting around doing nothing, but it seems like sometimes I'm working to only protect/maintain what I already have. I need to find a way to put my rentals on autopilot. They almost are. I put maybe 4 or 5 days a month into my rentals, and the income is enough to support a modest lifestyle. Almost zero debt makes a buck go farther.
The question, for me, is not knowing how much cash is needed, but rather, how to be content with the cash I already have. That would truly transform my life. Please don't make assumptions. I'm not income rich. I have good assets and have great health. I'd wager that most here pay more in taxes than I make in total income. That said, my problem is not acquiring more income, but rather, acquiring the position to do what I want, when I want. This thread is interesting. It made me think. |

Payoff house, HELOC (for kids tuition), other misc bills, and have enough to quit working in my current business and focus in on a new endeavor then I would need between 3/4- 1M $
