New boat- America 2.0

Teak maindeck finish is laminated to a glass matt all caulk and sanding can be done in a controlled environment, when it's time it can be picked up and installed sort of like a decal

Port Orford Cedar/Balsa/Port Orford Cedar laminated planks for the main hull, very light and very strong

t & g ends

thinner POC/B/POC for the main deck subtrate

intermediate keel section/fuel and water tankage, 50,000# lead keel will hang from here

intermediate keel plating

pins that locate the intermediate keel section to the main hull, the keel is removable for maintainance

t & g pin will be welded to intermediate transverse bulkheads

Bill, how exciting. LOA? 45-50'? Hard to tell from the pics. Looks a little serious, offshore racing? Tell us more.

I sometimes think that cars are too expensive, then I remember that there are boat guys and everything seems alright.

BOAT= Bring Out Another Thousand!
A buddy of mine has a sign at the helm of his boat that says "A boat is a hole in the water into which you pour money".
Looks very cool!!!

It'll be a 3/4 replica of the Schooner America,

here's a pic of a full size clone(above the waterline and above deck) of the original America which we built in '95, that clone was all Port Orford Cedar but w/ veneered carbon masts & spars as the only trick components. The new replica will be trick in every way you can imagine

My wife and I took a sail on the Schooner America a few years ago when we were in the Florida Keys. She is a beautiful ship !

The America built for an impatient customer took ~ 1.5 yrs, this one is for us and is being built as there is spare time and money will take longer

Stunning project. Magnificent schooner. Will she be powered?

Do you charter the one in Newport, RI? My wife is from Providence, so we get up there often and we always get over to Newport and book some time on one of the local charter schooners for a bay sail.

I am envious. Wanna sail-swap? You can sail our Catalina 30 Mark II in challenging Lake Lanier, GA whenever down here for a sail in Newport?

Please keep us posted on the progress.

Bob

Progess since the last set, it's starting to look like a boat

Glue gun used to apply glue, then a gang to put the composite plank(Port Orford/balsa/PortOrford) in place

Cockpit walls are aluminum honeycomb w/ f/g skin, the wood on the lay out table is the jig for the inner/and outer walls, it will have a mahogany cap and lots of storage space

So very cool...thanks for sharing.

I'm an NYC based sailor...let me know if you need an extra deckhand for the shakedown (although I'm sure you'll have more than enough help)
