According to that chart, I could gain 15lbs and still be "healthy". Yeah, right.

I need another 15lbs of weight like I need another hole in the head. Now if it was all muscle, it might be different, but that's not happening any time soon.

If you are computing BMI on one of the many systems that just account for your weight and height on the computer, then many of those give you flawed answers. They are made for the "average" person which in many ways each individual is far from average. Many times it can be deemed unhealthy to be at the weight stated by the "BMI calculator". Until you go to the doctor and he measures you out properly there really is not much to worry about!

About the same for me, I weigh what I did in high school.
I don't have much of a sweet tooth and quit eating when I'm full.

That chart is nuts. When I was running I was 200 lbs. At 6'1" that made me overweight according to the chart, but I looked awful and people were asking me if I was sick. No more running and I'm at 220. That would make me obese, but I'm staying at this weight. I look and feel better than at 200 lbs.

Bullchit mass index - when I was in the airforce, I weighed in at 72kg, I'm 175cm. BMI had me at borderline obese. I had less than 10 percent body fat. As I said, it's absolute BS.

Well, high BMI just says you have a lot of mass for your height. If that mass is honest-to-God muscle, that's fine. As long as you aren't fooling yourself . . . anything that you can't flex to be hard as a - well, "rock" is a bit exaggerated, how about hard as a book? A paperback book - is fat.

A buddy of mine says there is talk of revamping BMI to a simply pass/fail measure: you waistline just above the navel should be half your height or less.

Before we throw the baby out with the bathwater, I'm curious how well the current numbers fit non-US populations. Americans, despite obesity being so common that we've made weight loss a spectator sport, always loophole this issue when you talk statistics. Everyone's heavy with muscle, have a glandular or other medical problem, or got bad genes. Nationally, we're fat; individually, we're sick or misunderstood.

At 45, I find myself starting to putting on weight. I am 5'8" and 170 lbs. I intend to get back down to 160-165 this summer by eating fewer late night snacks and exercising a bit. I don't want to end up being a fat arse the rest of my life.

I just had a Bod Pod test last week. I'm 5'9.5" 164lb, body fat at is 8.6%. BMI is a tough standard, especially for folks that are big boned. It has taken years of diet and exercise to get down from 235lbs.

Americans (especially) have been so well nourished over the last several generations that our frames are simply more robust than they used to be. We have wider shoulders, more broad hips, etc... I don't believe the charts account for any of this, but I also don't think they are that far off for it.. This is my theory anyway.
