PILOTS - Please reveal your favorite approach views from the air
Okay, back in the 60's I soloed in a Piper Tri-Pacer and went on to log 58 total hours but never got my license. My flying these days goes as far Flight Simulator of which I am still trying my best to land a 747 on a carrier (where in the hell is the hook switch anyways)?! I am always looking for a new and beautiful approach location. Recently it was Sitka, Alaska.
In today's Wall Street Journal (8/16/12) there is a great article on pilot's favorite views from the air (majority were mostly on approach). Some pilots noted their best and scenic approaches as follows: New York's LaGuardia "expressway Visual Runway 31 Washington's Reagan National....Potomac River Run Portland Maine - Runway 29 Harbor Visual approach Juneau Alaska's Gastineau Channel approach Anyone add to the list.................. Thanks Bob |

Not a pilot, but used to enjoy the approach to Kai Tak in Hong Kong.

I was based at Sedona one summer years ago flying tourists on tours of the area. Loved the area, its absolutely beautiful there but a real difficult airport when the winds pick up...

If we are tossing wartime experiences out of this, guess that the airport at Innsbruck would be high on my list. Situated in the valley between two very tall mountain ranges, its pretty "sporty" to fly into when there are any clouds or weather in the area. They "s-turn" you back and forth on the approach to get you down and only once you shoot the same approach in the clear do you realize just how close you are really getting to the mountains... This is what you see when you finally break out of the clouds. Note the mountains surrounding everything in the area: ![]() Also have to mention Samadan (St. Moritz airport) for being difficult. Its at almost 6000 ft elevation, smack dab in the middle of two mountain ranges and almost impossible to get into when there is weather in the area.
