Amazing post office supidity

I don't check my PO box that often, so I find out the hard way that if your bill is more than 10 days past due, they send all your mail back to the senders and give the box to someone else. Why not just lock you out of the box like they used to? Friggin' insane.

Doesn't the Post Office have alternate contact information for you? 10 days is a short timeline to "evict" you however.

And you can't pay for your box with cash (I've had a US PO Box for over 30 yrs) you have to pay for it with a money order was the last note I got in mine.

What part of "This note is legal tender for all debts public and private" don't they understand?

Now they collect that info. But they had my physical address.

The exact same quality of employee training and customer service will soon run health care for everyone.

I suspect you're not allowed to pay with cash because of the number of mail fraud scams going on these days. They need know who's collecting the mail at the box. But a 10-day eviction? Wow. I have a PO box for work, and they're extremely lenient with renewals, uncollected registered mail, etc. They know sometimes I'm away, and they'll hold stuff for me no problem.

Private POB at a mail store instead? I think they will even forward your mail.

How could you NOT want a DMV worker in charge of your health care? I mean, what could possibly go wrong?

You need two types of ID to get a PO box........even if you had a PO box for years after 911 they made it a requirement.

I have a PO box up in Moses Lake, Wa. that once a month forwards ALL my mail to me in SoCal. Costs me about $10.00 a month extra for the postage and thats it. I've never even been there. I pay the bill online.

I am doubtful about the accuracy of some of the statements here.

You have to pay for a PO Box using a money order? The USPS website says "You can reserve your PO Box™ online with a credit card. After that, you can pay renewal fees online at USPS.com®, by mail, at an Automated Postal Center®, or at the Post Office™ where your PO Box is located."

And the same site says there is a $15 "late payment fee", which seems inconsistent with closing your PO Box and returning all your mail if you are 10 days late.

Anyway, use a Mailboxes Etc or similar business if you prefer their terms and fees.

eehhhhh? Money Order?
The Post Office sells money orders.
Buy one (PAY CASH), fill it out in front of them, and give it to them with a "WTF?" look on your face...
Eat the $1 for the money order fee, just for the irony of it.

Our little barrier island PO takes cash...but no CC.

Not a prob. for me.

Small beach towns have their advantage.

I went to school with the postmaster's brother.

Everyone knows each other here.

It's like Mayberry - but with better surf...

Remember, a lot of small-town post offices are no longer official USPS post offices, but private businesses that run a "post office". The post office I go to is like this. So they can have their own rules, I think. Mine doesn't take credit cards or debit cards.

How could they require such a thing? What about that poor little old lady who doesn't have an ID?
You have a right to commit voter fraud, not to get a PO box under a different name
