How would you proceed?
You damage the property of a long time friend right in front of him.

You make it right.
Can't wait to hear the rest of the story.

Ask for your beer back and apologize.
Fix it if you can, hire someone if you can't. Hand him cash. Hand him a check. Tell him to send you the bill. I don't understand the question.

Fix it. I would do the same for a stranger, it's the right thing to do. More to this story?

Parked side by side.
Friend wasn't paying attention and opened his truck door into my fender. Scratched paint and dent. Very small. Expensive fix. He went with option #3. 20 year friendship ended... KT

Then he wasn't as good of a friend as you thought. It sucks, but some people lose way more than $700-1000 learning that lesson.

Option #1 or #2 depending on finances.

I picked option one. Gotta do the right thing...unfortunately your friend didn't see it that way...

"So very sorry. Get it fixed then send me the bill."
Is PDR and spot touch up an option? I bought a BMW with a quarter sized spot on the hood that had been sanded down to the primer by the PO. Guy who worked in the little tent behind the BMW dealership airbrushed and blended it for $100. It was the most incredible thing I'd ever seen. I was prepared for it to be a big improvement, but it was truly undetectable when he was done.

Funny the situations where you learn a friend from an acquaintance.

F*ck that, I'd offer to pay for a stranger, let alone a friend.
You're better off without him in your vicinity.

a or b. as long as it's fixed. if it's your fault, you fix it.
couple years ago i reversed into my friend's car. put a dent into my bumper cover. demolished her brand new body kit bumper. just had her send the bill for a new bumper and paint job. wrote a check. done and done. now we can still joke about that incident. |

Kinda feel the same way... why is there even a discussion? You did it, fix it. Whats "the rest of the story" that we do not know yet?

He was not a real friend then. Not a big loss...

I wouldn't even do that. I'd give them the keys to my car, while I got it fixed on my dime and on my time. If it's 100% my fault, why would I make him spend half a day dropping a car off, picking it up, etc? Time is more important than money - I wouldn't take either of his.

Trekkor,
I had strangers offered to pay in similar situation but a good friend who didn't. I spent couple hundred on repair. When he heard about the repair, he even commented that "you are crazy". Sometimes people just don't see the need of a smooth paint/body, and don't see the need of being responsibility. Can you find another less expensive shop to repair that?
