Yep, prices need to go up. At the market price everyone will fill their tanks. At an inflated price, people will buy enough to get them to and from work for a couple of days leaving more supply available to spread around (plus the "investors" won't be able to play).

I continue to believe that traffic engineers(people who set intersection timing and speed limits) continue to play a significant role in daily national energy usage.

The internal combustion engine is wasted while sitting still.

Yep.

A lot of energy is wasted by stupid government policies that dumb down the system to accommodate the lowest common denominator and/or special interests. Perversely it is then government which rushes in clamoring about energy use and claiming it can fix the problem - which it has had a large part in creating. Anyone else see a bit of a problem with this?

I also don't see a problem with charging more for the fuel. At higher cost, people will buy only what they need and there will be more to go around. If the price is much lower then people will over buy and many will be without any fuel.

Not sure I agree with your logic. Gas tanks are only so big. People can only carry so many cans.
And does that logic work for the hotels also? Raising prices 75-99%?

Ever hear of "traffic calming"? Another BS idea. Oh and the "re-invention" of the traffic circle. Once the damage and death toll rise high enough, that will go away as it did in the past.

At the time that California government wants expensive bullet trains they want to "calm" (slow down) other traffic.

Just one of many sore spots with me.

Just saying it is possible. My dad ran a gas station in the 70s and saw it happen. He would run out of gas just hours after a refill.

As fot hotels, maybe. If you need a place to catch up and take a hot shower for a day or so but they're all booked...

Also, who is to tell a private business what they can and can not do?

Individual sellers raising prices is rationing, only it's by a private seller rather than a government mandate. It's rationing based on money available rather than need or equitable distribution. That's what the "free market" essentially is--a rationing system.

The "problem" lies in the apparent motive of the seller and whether or not he could have rationed in a more acceptable way in a community crisis. If the seller was being as altruistic, as some believe, in making gas available to more people, could he not have limited the volume of gas sold to each customer to ensure more people got something?

Everyone knows this is a crisis. Everyone knows this is a temporary situation. Everyone knows the supply will increase soon. Everyone knows that the long lines waiting to buy gas are made up of people just like them who are struggling to make it through a crisis. Everyone knows the seller who raises his price to $50 a gallon is making a huge profit off their misery, not because he can, but because he wants to ensure everyone gets their fair share. It's his way to support his neighbors. Yeah, right.

Risng prices are the best thing that could happen to get the area on its feet rapidly. Higher prices attract goods. When Pasani water sells for $10 a dozen, every uhaul in Virginia will be filled with bottles and be heading toward NYC. The market will cause the price to start down as soon as supplies start to meet demand.

Price-gouging in a federal disaster area, (FEMA area), is a federal crime and people go to jail for it. As they should.

That is enough to piss me off. My tax dollars are providing free gasoline. What total BS. When do the other states citizens get 10 gallons of free gas? That will put some businesses out of business. Total waste of tax dollars.

I'm all for the higher prices here in Florida or maybe a rationing deal. Lots of people leave when a hurricane approaches and fill up and stop at a grocery store and load up with food. Higher prices would insure they fill up further up the road where it's not going to be affected thus leaving food and fuel for the people remaining. We get our fuel by barge which is not going to return to normal for a while.

I'm experiencing a deja-vu here. Didn't you say the same thing a few months ago on another Pelican board?
Yes, I have a problem with government kowtowing to special interests.

Same here. OMG that is total BS. If I build a house, or community in the middle of a bombing range and there comes a time when I lose everything then it is MY fault for doing it, and no one should bail me out. If I build my house or community alone the coast and the Atlantic ocean comes over and takes everything then same thing. It is your fault for living there. People need to suffer the consequences of their own actions, and choosing to live in an area that might get hammered by mother nature is a choice. Where was MY help when hurricane Isabelle came through here and decided to put MY trees on top of MY house? Oh wait I handled my issues myself, and I also planned for it in advance. Shame on me for actually thinking ahead and relying on MYSELF to insure my family was taken care of. People need to suck it up and simply deal with the cards they were dealt or chose to play. Self reliance is something that is slowly being bred out of people.
