Barrel lengths are nothing to mess with. I've lost track of the number of times I've been out with my buddy (he has a bunch of NFA toys--full auto, suppressors, SBRs, SBSs, etc.) and people at the range have called the cops because someone was there with "illegal guns". Of course he always has his paperwork with him, and the cops don't mind because they get an opportunity to look at some cool ($$$) toys.

i'm pretty sure the short barrel stamp is $5

The $200 tax stamp is for full auto. It's been that price since 1934 and guess how much a Thompson Machine gun sold for new at sears in 1934? $200! so it was a 100% tax on it to keep the poor person from buying one

Don't forget why they included suppressors in the NFA - to prevent hungry folks from being able to easily poach livestock during the height of the Great Depression. Yeah, that's a good reason to have it still in effect. Repeal Prohibition and you suddenly end up with a bunch of underemployed Treasury agents looking for a new mission. What could go wrong?

All I know is I paid $200.00 for the stamp on my SBR last year.

It doesn't have some of the features (dust guard and forward assist) higher end AR's have, but we have never had an issue. Pull trigger round goes down range.

take a good hard look at "penetration values" on the different rounds mentioned.


i know this much, if yer a bad guy and you hide behind a 8x8x16 block wall, i will proceed to bean yer soon to be DEAD AZZ with my .308's, block by block and make them and mr bad guy INTO POWDERED MUNG PIE!


just take a look at what a .223 will do to 8x8x16 block. let alone one of bazillion homes built with T-111 siding/2x4's and some insulation and some 1/4" thick drywall!


i think with our litigious society, a 9mm would suffice(an hk vp70z with 19 rds enuff for ya?) or a 12 gauge with 1st rd being #6 birdshot followed by 00 buck or 000 buck.


in my case its my hk compact 9mm with 14rds of federal hollowpoints and a hk light (INSIGHT TECHNOLOGY) on the bottom rail. and of course my numba #1 weapon........."mr snuggles" farting ever so frequently at the foot of my bed every night.


now out hunting camping fishing out in der wild blue yonders.................the gloves are OFF! .308 or .44 mag/.357/.45 or 45/70 or .338 win mag or 12 gauge.

It is very light, well made and, frankly, a basic AR that is accurate and all we need.

You have pistols so for shotguns it is just too hard to match the 870 in price and performance. I have two. A Youth Express and a full size. Thousands of shells and not a FTF or misfire. You aren't going to impress anyone with the brand, but if you can shoot it doesn't made a difference.

I also have Remington, Winchester and Browning shotguns among others.

The bigger issue with shotguns is working through the various loads...I have two barrels for each 870, one for birds, one for deer and others.

For skeet? A pump gun is too slow to cycle for that game - at least it is for me. I'd go with an automatic.

I know about the rifles my AR is a 16". Didn't know that about the scatter guns ..

On a slightly different tack...

I keep a fire extinguisher by the door. Out of sight but I can reach it in about one second. If a methamphetamined person or angry person comes to the door I'm ready. AND if the police turn up and say I've been threatening people my lawyer can explain that after having attended a fire hazards course I tend to be ready to put out fires.

How much do you shoot, and what do you want to shoot? If you're interested in a long gun, and want to go all tactical, there are already some great suggestions. But possibly look at a .30-30, or .35 Remington. A lever action carbine is a very versitile firearm, and can be employed on a range, hunting or in a home defense situation.

With your .45, you could also look at a .45 Blackhawk convertible that could shoot .45 acp and .45 Colt, and you could get a lever action rifle in .45 Colt as well, or a semi-automatic carbine in .45acp. Then some reloading and casting equipment... An automatic, a single action revolver, a couple of carbines, the capability to make your own ammo = lots of cheap practice and supply chain freedom.

Home defense?

I cannot think of anything worse than any long gun, shotgun or carbine, for home defense. Maybe defense of property, out of doors, but certainly not indoors. They are simply too difficult to use in narrow hallways and doorways, when you are suddenly woken up in bed, and situations like that. They can also be taken away far too easily. Many in home defensive situations will find the homeowner actually in physical contact with the criminal, often stiff arming him while trying to hold a sidearm back far enough so he can't grab it.

Oh, and as far as "overpenetration", we discussed that at length on this forum just recently. It is pure and utter b.s. No such thing.
