My kids are number one. My marriage didn't work out but my kids are happy and doing well and I raised them on my own. My mum helped me a lot. She's a legend.

Next... Joined the army at 20 and did some good stuff in Africa with the UN. I was a medic and I'm proud of my service.

And lastly... The charity I'm currently involved with. I've helped more people than I know. Not by giving them money but by helping them get back on their feet after taking some hard knocks.

Definitely marrying Cindy. Without her, I'd either be dead or in jail.

I picked the right woman the first time (24 years ago) and have two wonderful kids. We all live on a 10 acre farm that we love, and I have survived damn near everything the world has to throw at me, and still am up walking around and being productive. As you can see, I don't have many of my nine lives remaining, so I try to enjoy life as it comes.

1) at 17 I was hit by a train in a Pinto (no explosion) only cuts to my face from the windshield
2) at 22 I survived Hodgkins desease cancer of the lymph nodes
3) at 25 I survived a blood clot that was 2" from my right lung
4) at 28 I survived a reoccurence of Hodgkins
5) at 40 I survived congestive heart failure (side effect of cancer chemotherapy)
6) at 44 I survived another round of congestive heart failure
7) at 47 I am going through what the doctor says is a reoccurance of Hodkins (more chemo)
8) at 47 in August of this year, some jerk ran a stop sign and t-boned my 83 Porsche 944 and suffered 17 broken bones, a surgury to mount a plate/pins/screws into my pelvis and a lacerated liver.

You may think all these things are bad, but I veiw them as I get stronger from each one and nothing phases me now

ckelly,

Props to you brother. It's people like you that I like to serve with...you take setbacks and drive on.

Best thing I've done is marry my wife...she and I are perfect mates and we just had our 25th anniversary.

Second best thing is spending all the amount of time necessary to raise our kids right.

Third best thing is after joining the military for 4 years to raise college money, making the decision to stay in for a career; just completed 26th year and counting.

Marrying my best friend over 10 years ago. Everything else positive in my life has stemmed from that day.

Not listening to my HS councilor... he had me pegged as a car mechanic and really pressured my family to have "joe go to trade school as he will only be working on cars the rest of his life"...

About 5-6 years after college was driving around town in a 2 year old Jaguar and pulled up to this jerk at a stoplight. He looked over and the jaw dropped. I said hello and said "I am not working on it, its mine and paid cash for it"... The light changed and we both motored off.

Have not seen him since but Craig Sobodka where-ever you are... you did not ruin my life and hope the other kids you worked with did not listen to you either.

Second thing was moving to Berlin and flying Medivac for 14 years... best years of my life.

Funny, that's what my moron counselor advised to me as well after taking some stupid standardized test. I've since found out that to be a high school or college counselor basically requires a pulse and not much more, so it all makes sense.

I can't brag too much about marrying my wonderful wife of 36 years, that was entirely selfish!

When I got back into music a few years ago, I couple I met while at the jam sessions advised me he had stopped treatments for cancer and was going to ride it out as best he could. In the meantime he wanted to make music.

Dave was a fantastic lead guitarist and I loved hearing him play. I was semi-retired, played enough guitar to back up my voice, so made it a point to get together with them whenever I could. In those four years, we would meet at restaurants in town (half way between our homes), when he felt up to it, or I would go to their house. And we rocked.

I convinced him to audition for the Pines Hotel in Digby and we were asked to play that evening for the Provincial Tourism AGM. Dave had a ball. We were booked to come back in September and October but Dave didn't make it.

In his last month, I would take my guitar into the hospital room and we would 'jam', although he could no longer play. The last song we did 'together' was Pink Floyd "Wish You Were Here". At his funeral, I sang a song which I had written about his younger days, climbing in the Rockies, based upon music he had written.

His widow, whom I now call "Sis" gave me his Guitar T shirt after the internment. I wear it in his memory when we play a gig in August around the time of his passing.

RIP Dave. I miss you, Buddy. (Dave is standing, playing a '30s Gibson parlor guitar)

Make the moment

Been married for almost 25 years, so that's good (divorce is a major destroyer of wealth, among other things).

Never gotten into debt. For example, never have had a car payment. When I was starting out and only had $2500 for a car, I bought a $2500 car.

Never paid a penny of interest to a credit card company. Or to anyone else, other than a home mortgage, which I paid off by my mid 30s (and to cash flowing real estate investments).

Have been very prudent with real estate investments. Unlike the sentiment expressed by 90% of the people here in the "Real Estate Never Goes Down" thread, RE can be a great, life changing investment, but it can and often does lead to bankruptcy. It's not easy and it takes a lot of experience (and patience) to do it right.

But, when done right, it can easily be one of the "best things you have done" to secure your future.

Worked very, very hard from the age of 18 to my early 40s. Which has allowed me to slow down quite a bit by my mid to late 40s, spend a lot of time with my family, and do the things I want to do.

Meeting my second(and last) wife and having kids with her.

I haven't really done anything fantastic in my life but I am devoted to my family and try every day to set a good example for my kids.
