The Internet in 5 Years?

With the advent of tablets and smart phones one has to wonder just what the net can't do for you?

The technology leaps as well as available access, what is next?

Is 'Singularity' that close?

Wolfram's A New Kind of Science offers up a very interesting and possible reality that may just be the very thing Clarke writes about in Childhoods End.

It seems we are moving in that direction quicker than imagined...

Edward Fredkin proposed a new theory of physics....that reality should not be considered particles and forces but rather bits of data modified according to computational rules. His thesis is based on a new view of reality, instead of the analytical approach most associated with traditional math like differential equations, rather its defined according to a computational approach associated with algorithms.

While his ideas are very interesting, temper them with the fact that he also believes the universe is something like a computer developed to solve a problem of sorts.

While recently in Phoenix on holidays I was listening to a tv program about theft in stores. Statistically this documentary said that 1 in 10 shoppers shoplifted. That seems high. Anyway what does this have to do with the internet? It said that many stolen products get sold online. Also buying a new laptop battery the other day from my local battery store, he said that some folks get stung buying batteries online that are actually dead batteries. Having no business address and once they have your credit card no. you have minimal recourse.

Just saying that the internet has opened up opportunities for the bad guys to scam you. Dealing with legitimate businesses and individuals is essential. As the internet gets used more and more particularly for online shopping there will be more ripoffs in the future. Buyer beware

I must say that dealing with Pelican Parts is a pleasure. Service is good, prices are reasonable.

You have no idea. I operate a number of ecommerce sites and there is an absolute AVALANCHE of stolen credit-cards being used to buy stuff as well. I don't want to go into details on how we flag and catch most, but some of these guys are getting REALLY good.

Most of them are idiots fortunately, but some criminals are getting very sophisticated. The latest one we nearly missed for a $15,000 order because it all seemed legit, every last detail. Only my spidey sense caught it...

What scares me are the kids. No joking and some of my relatives kid's from the age of two are playing with i-pads, phones, etc. The 5 yr. olds are now getting iPhones, Kindle's. The 6 year old has a facebook account, gmail. The 6th and 7th graders get a laptop supplied loaner and taken home from school. Homework, MS Office basics and e-mail with the school is required. Family of kids are like little droids - zombie state and always connected. So annoying when we visit and THEY pick a movie where we all are to share and enjoy the evening. But what does the family do? Mom, Daddio to all five kids EACH on electronic devices DURING the movie!

I wonder if there was a generation that was scared that kids these days learned to use books?

Omawgash, kids these days have their own books, they aren't even waiting to learn to open scrolls anymore! I walk around outside and see kids in the great outdoors where they could be running or working, and they are just sitting under trees with books! Oh the huge manatee!

Here's a thought.

Very soon, 10-20-50 years from now we will all be wearing contact lenses and ear pieces.

The contact lenses will be filled with Nano technology.

There will be a heads up display as part of your field of vision, a wireless ear piece, and the whole thing will be connected to the internet.

It will be so far advanced that you just ask yourself, “how do I adjust the valves on a 911” and a display will appear on the lenses with an audio tutorial, and in two minutes you will be adjusting the valves on your car being guided by the video and audio streaming from the internet. Kind of like you tube on steroids. That’s if there are any 911’s left on the planet. But you get the idea.

Anything you want to know, anywhere , anytime, will be available as a heads up display. Everyone will be an expert and school systems will no longer be needed.

Just a theory.

I don't know if you guys are seeing what could very well be unfolding before our eyes! We may very well be witnessing the evolution of humans within our lifetime. The actual physical change may be slight but the mental change will be significant. The speed at which our children can think and the amount of information they can manipulate is more then we could at their age. Think about it. I could do some thimngs my father or mother could do but not better. They had problem solving skills as well as creativity. My kids are way more advanced in those areas than I was at their age. Their ability to draw information and manifest it into knowledge is amazing. they are not the only ones. I see other kids that are very capable as well.

This technology spike has helped them move into a very new and advanced direction. While I fear that the furture will be slaves to technology information data dumps I am reminded that we had the same albeit an order of magnitude smaller (think books and encyclopedias).

I hope they finally get a good BS filter for that day. Right now try to look up any medical issue. Often the total quack sites are top of the search. It takes some digging to filter out the garbage and find the truth.

In the past the Internet was a place for absolute freedom. Look for it to be taxed and regulated.

I was thinking of this when Lubey mentioned encyclopedia's. A wealth of info, often will read more than just what I was looking for. There are a lot of things it takes less time to look up in a book due to search engine trash. If you know a site that has relevant info, that is a plus.

It can be mildly entertaining to put in the name of a concept car, and then some type of car part, and see the sites that still pull this up as a key word on their page.

We already live in an interactive universe. Most people just don't acknowledge it.

I think that in ten years, there will be a ton more cool stuff, but they will want you to pay for every privilege. 3 or 400 dollar usage fees will not be uncommon.
