Learn me up on GunSafes

What's to look for in a "real" gun safe, not really size, but cost/vs/quality.

I'm not arming a zombie attack, just a couple of long spoons, short spoons, and family documents. Don't need to store dozens and dozens of rifles/pistols.

I'm in the $1000 range, I see many are rated in time-vs-temperature for fire protection, what about the locks, digital vs key vs tumbler, drill resistance, interior lining, golden-rod, exterior finish and such?

I'm thinking of something along these lines, but I'm totally open to all aspects.

Any pointers on where to shop and what to look for? size doesn't matter, I'm looking quality over quantity.

I figure these are one of those items you can spend $1000 on today, and still sell it for $700-800 many years from now.

I am not an expert on this subject but I'll start off with some basics until the pros chime in: I would not buy an electronic lock. I like the mechanical versions. They are safe in terms of break-in but will be slower to operate if you are in a hurry.

Always buy bigger than you think you'll need. This will have the side-effect of it being heavier and not as easily carried off. On the note of carry off: Make sure to anchor whatever you get solidly to the wooden or concrete structure of your house.

Do you care about looks...or is this something that you would keep in the garage?

Watch craigslist for safes! If you're lucky you might pick up one from a business that's failing.

I failed to grab a TL30 that was the right size for $750!

Buy larger than what you think that you will need, Photos, cash, birthcertificates, negatives watches, dvds that you don't need out, ammo, jewlery, pistols, optics, mags, slhotguns, rif les, & cameras.

When I bought my safe I was "All I need is 1 rifle,1pistol & 1 shotgun add 4 other rifles and 20 mags and other items and there's not much air in there.

Do take some time and look at Gun Safes : Fire Safe Manufacturer : Sturdy Gun Safe he's got some great videos that will make you want one of his safes. I really want Model 3627-6 : Gun Safes : Fire Safe : Sturdy Safe with his fire protection and some other options

There will be a few safe sellers at the WAC show in Puyallup this weekend. You would get to look at various safes and features.

Ditto on buying more safe that you think you need.

Keep ammo in a fireproof safe. If you have a house fire and ammo starts cooking off, the firefighters will take a step back and watch it burn.

Also look for a handle with a slip clutch so they do not snap off your handle with a cheater bar.

+1 n buying bigger than you think you might need.

Also, keep pry bars, crow bars, cheater bars, angle grinders, etc. inside the safe where they can't be used to pry the thing open.

Good video, thanks for posting. Hardest thing for me was to determine what level of risk I was willing to accept. Once comfortable with what you think are reasonable risk levels you can find the safe that meets those requirements.

To me, the safe is only 1 component in the safety measure. Home alarm, locks, bolts...

thanks all for the inputs...........it's really amazing how advanced some safes have become, with even USB computer ports passing through the walls, so you can put a remote computer Hard-Drive inside your safe for automatic fire/theft proof data backup.

What ever you buy...bolt it down in a corner with the door edge up to the wall.
