Maybe they are doing this but who knows. I would think they could dig out (by hand) around the bunker to possibly learn a way in or maybe see in with a fiber optic camera. Or maybe I've been watching too many Jason Bourne movies.

MIDLAND CITY, Ala. — A law enforcement official says a 5-year-old has been safely released after a days-long standoff between police and the boy's abductor.

The law enforcement official briefed on the situation said Monday that Jim Dykes, the man who abducted the boy from a school bus after fatally shooting the bus driver, is dead. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to discuss the situation.

Agent Richardson said, fearing for the child's immediate safety, FBI agents breached the door to the bunker and removed the child. The boy was rushed from the bunker and placed in a nearby waiting ambulance.

Well, that's about the best possible solution. The child is fine, at least physically. The taxpayers will be spared the expense of a trial for Mr. Dykes.
A hardy "well done" and "thank you" to all the law enforcement officials involved would see to be in order.
The whole thing is sad, however.
Bus driver dead.
Vietnam vet dead.
Child perhaps scarred mentally.
Two parents scared out of their wits.
A whole bunch of cops inconvenienced.

It's a ef-ed up world sometimes....

The "keyboard experts" are well meaning and want to get the situation resolved as much as anyone. They are just stating their opinion which is what this forum is all about. What is amazing is when people are criticized for stating their opinion on a forum which is all about stating their opinion.

The mother of an Alabama boy held hostage in an underground bunker for days said her son witnessed officers fatally shooting his kidnapper.

Jennifer Kirkland's comments about her son, identified by authorities only by his first name, Ethan, came in an interview with psychologist Phil McGraw for an episode of the "Dr. Phil Show" that is set to air Wednesday.
In a promotional clip posted online, Kirkland said her 6-year-old son saw officers shoot the gunman identified as Jimmy Lee Dykes, 65, of Midland City.
