No it would be more like what safety protocols did her company have in place for events like this, and why was and alone in a risky area..

My company doesn't even send the young male interns to events alone.

You gotta let em make mistakes while they grow up, so when they are grown up they know how to spot a problem before it happens and have a mind that can deal with unexpected things.

And Sid, a company that doesn't let young male interns to events alone , does that to avoid having that young male intern end up on top of the bar, ****faced singing "thongtottotthooong"..

That has to do with the Company's reputation, image, not "safety".

It's interesting to me that the general consensus is that the twenty-something generation is woefully dependent on their parents, and seriously lacking in skillsets that can keep them out of trouble, yet we'll lambaste a father who cares enough to at least think about her safety.

What would this thread look like if a tragedy actually took place, and he came in with the sad story after the fact? I'm betting it would degenerate into a thread full of admonishments that he "should have known she couldn't handle travelling out of the country alone, nobody her age can even change a tire."
I see both sides of the argument. This responder has taken the time and thought to respond in an intelligent manner. Some of you are just plain .....well let's put it this way and establish some objectivity and see what kind of a job you have done as a father/husband. Ask your wife/kids what kind of a job have I done as a husband/father?

I have learned a lot from this forum and will continue to do so.

No, we had incident several years back where a young male traveling alone was singled out and brutally murdered....

Hence, we don't travel alone, never speak of where we stay or room number, always in a hotel, no outside doors, always on an upper floor....

You can (and will) justify your obsessive smothering because "you can never be too careful". And it's very hard to prove that what you're doing is helping. Hey, if she doesn't get brutally murdered on this trip, that's proof your sheltering presence made a difference, right?

Conversely, regardless of how many people here state their opinion otherwise, it's very hard to prove that what you're doing is hurting.

Now wait just a dog-gone minute here buster

At least 4-5 of us have thoughfully demanded pictures and several more have intelligently offered their "escort" services, and is that the thanks we get?

Seriously though RS, you're a "good guy"...I don't think anyone is questioning that...overprotective for an ADULT daughter I believe, but we're not "walking in your shoes". Just curious...what is your daughter's position on this matter? I get the feeling she's "rolling her eyes" and proclaiming "But dad..."

Be well with whatever you decide...she's your "little girl"...always will be, but now she's an ADULT "little girl" imo.

Now back to those pictures we've requested

there was, in fact, a series of random-ish stabbings last night.
downtown.

tell her to stay away from this neighbourhood:

What does your 24 year old daughter think about all of this? Is she wanting you there? Have you even talked to her about it? What is her input?

With all due respect, when you post something like this on a public forum and ~98% of the responders tell you that you're bonkers, you need to really consider it. An equivalent situation would be if I ask whether washing my hands over 200 times a day is excessive and all but one person tells me I'm nuts. I then identify the other compulsive hand-washer as "responding in an intelligent manner" and dismiss the others as meanies. I'm sure that no one is as thorough as you in the husband/father department, but they might be a wee bit saner.

Don't shoot the messenger.

None, nutcase. But I've observed about 10,000 of them being raised and I've never seen anything this abnormal.

As you are free to do, but what you can't do, with any credibility, is advise another man about his child.

When he asks for advice, he's asking me to advise him, no?

True, but to make the leap from a father simply wanting to travel with his daughter on her first significant trip to "obsessive smothering" is a bit much.

As I re-read the thread, there are quite a few folks with compassion who saw that there was a genuine concern by the father, not some creepy obsession, like many others concluded. I'm surprised that a father with daughters would be among the latter.
