If I climb a mountain several times on different workouts, it always is within 3 feet on the summit.

My tracking / logging of exercise really helps keeping me motivated / going.

I'm pretty sure that elevation is through a barometer of some sort. You get elevation data indoors when there are no GPS signals present.

I do have smoothing on but the elevation data is ridiculous, 3000' of elevation change on a 5 mi route where the biggest hill is maybe 100' x4

The 500 is great and gives data that coincides w/ Google earth elevations and the totals are at the very least in the ball park and are also consistent over the same 30mi route

I use Map my Ride for biking, but only to generate courses. None of the "apps" are better than a dedcated device like the Garmins. I use a Garmin Edge 800 for my biking needs.

Something is wrong with your watch. It should not be that bad. Here more info on the 305 by the DC Rainmaker guy who is pretty much the GPS watch review guru on the net:

Quote:
It’s pretty amazing to look at total ascent/decent, which includes the tons of times you go up and down small hills. Beware though that it’s best to use some of the altitude correction features available in software such as Sports Tracks as the native altitude sensors within the device are a bit ‘liberal’ due to using GPS elevation instead of a barometric altimeter. So sometimes it’s a bit off.
The link is here:
http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2007/11/review-of-garmin-forerunner-305.html

Back to tracking software. The above article is fairly old but it also mentions Sport Tracks for tracking activities with the DC Rainmaker guy appears to use. Looks pretty solid.

My oldest full function bike computer used a barometer. And often, due to changes in the weather, would show a different altitude at the start and the finish, on a circle ride.

I've found the Garmin GPS to be pretty good, but I don't use it for gospel.

great tips on this thread. first time i used Nike running, i found out my five miler was really a 4 miler. bummer!

I'm reading though this and one thing I can't figure out. Are you running with your smartphone somehow attached to you? I tried running with a wristband mini-disc player years ago and it bothered the heck out of me. I can't imagine carrying an Iphone on a run.

Or is this some sort of static upload to map a course and you just follow it?

He is probably using a jersey that has pockets in the back.

I keep my Samsung Galaxy in a Spibelt Classic when I run. $20. Works great.

I use one of these for my run/walks. They work great and I can add drink bottles to them.

Anyone use an armband pouch? Seems they'd fit phone, keys, money.

I really can't have anything on me, things jostling around or moving are a major issue on lung runs. Ear buds for instance are more hassle then they are worth to me, having to put one back in or adjust one really screws up my timing.

It may be geeky, but I use a plain bike jersey-perfect for Iphone, wallet, car keys if I'm at a trailhead, a gel flask or two if needed, yada...

Looks really good on the girls. I couldn't stand it.

I minimize my carry on runs to a flip phone (remember those?) and a house key in my pant pocket. Longer runs I take a bottle but keep it in my hand.

Speaking of ear buds - am I the only one running without music? I mean, I see people at races with ear plugs playing music!?

It is super annoying if you share a trail either on foot or on the bike. The person you want to pass has no clue you are coming. You can yell at them, ring your bell etc. Once I pass them with the dog a few inches away, they often jump 3 feet to the side because they are startled. It is enjoyable to watch that.

I don't for the exact reason you mentioned, I want to be aware of everything going on around me.

I don't wear buds on the bike. I think it is a sin. Just as bad as wearing earbuds while driving.

Target : '+itemtitle+' : Image Zoom

Pandora+Run=Zone

I listen to music when I train, but it would be impossible for me during races--I need to concentrate solely on the run. My trail races and Obstacle Course runs physically wouldn't allow it.
