You are seriously deluded if you think a girl (other than trailer trash) will be impressed or think you are loaded if you pull up in a 30 year old Porsche. C'mon now, a loaded new Camry is more expensive. Drive whatever you want, that reflects who you are and that is always the best first impression unless you are a total D-bag and know it.

Here's the funny thing; I don't have that opinion from the Porsche drivers I've met in the world...it's more of a stereotype from movies and a small minority of owners that make a lot noise compared to the average cool person who drives one.

But the stereotype is very real with women. They judge the hell out of any perceived display of insecurity or compensating/trying too hard. I've talked to a couple of random strangers driving new 991s lately who were parking the car, just want to know how they like it, etc., they could not have been cooler. Friendly, not dicks at all. I thought one guy was going to throw me the keys.

I disagree. All types of folks are impressed with 30-year old Porsches, especially 911's and 930's. I think most guys who own these cars do so out of passion, not to "show off." And I'm always amused with the "new" Camry is more expensive argument. Plenty of 30-year old Porsches out there that cost well into the six figures....

I remember my first Ferrari, a red 1961 cabriolet. However, I remember better the winter we repainted it and I drove a rusty old 1957 Dodge 4 door that I bought for $40.00. That was one of the best years for my love life and I never even mentioned my snazzy FIAT. Focus on your girl, not the car. Tweezer has very good advice.

Well, speeder, I should hope we meet one day so I can prove you wrong. Secondly, just because a woman has a common interest as you doesn't mean she won't have her own life. I have found that to be an issue in my own relationships. I have TOO many interests and hobbies that most men can't keep up with me.

My other belief in relationships is be who you are from the beginning. A man who knows all my faults and weaknesses from the beginning and falls in love with me despite of them? Well, he is gonna be a keeper. And as such, I would want the man to do the same. I would respect a male chauvinist pig more than a male chauvinist pig that pretended not to be.

Long story short, drive what car you want to drive.

Thank goodness for Tweeze to give this thread some closure. Hers was the best advice. Asking a woman about a woman's point of view....makes sense to me.

Present company excluded, of course, on the comment "most Porsche owners are dicks."

Regarding Tweeze's post.....she underscores what I have been saying from the beginning....

Most great relationships I've seen have a certain amount of autonomy in them, i.e. each person has their own life as well as their life together and I would expect my car hobby to be in the "own life" category. I'd be much more concerned with making the wrong impression on some total catch of a chick. It is unfortunate that most people do not see a Porsche driver as some interesting, adventurous motor racing fan. They see him as tool who is looking for attention. I own them in spite of the image. It's not a good image.
+1- for me the car thing is a hobby- a personal hobby I for one don't want a GF that is rabid about cars.... It would suck having someone around who WAS EXACTLY THE SAME.

Autonomy is where it's at. Keeps things interesting. She has her things, I have my things, and we have our things...

rjp

EDIT- oh, and that means I don't need to listen to silly crap she wants to do to her car, and I don't need to spend money or time on it. It also means in high risk areas, we take her transportation appliance and my stuff stays home, safe.

One more thing too- the car hobby is best understood by other car people. In the real world, I don't want to advertise I'm into cars.

Ever see those Corvette dorks who must wear all the swag? or the Hillibilles with Ford swag head to toe? Would you ever do up your entire house with car garbage?

I don't. It's a private hobby. I raise an eyebrow on people who do that - even if I like their work..

Live near the trailer park do ya? Here in the DC area the girls are not impressed by even the newest and most expensive sports cars. BTW, no one is driving the six figure collectibles on dates, the OP is talking about a run of the mill 930, not really all that special.

My post was kinda jesting... but kinda serious... asking a bunch of stranges on the internet dating advice? Probably a bad idea. Asking THIS bunch of strangers (ladies excluded) invatation to a train wreck!
IMHO
YMMV

Shoot, the gals I all chase only care about "new".. it's that simple. They couldn't care less about a 30 year old penis extension. They shun it.

With that said I don't give a **** what she thinks about my car. I used to drive a beat up rusty 69 Bug on dates now and then when I had a new Vette and a trick 67 Camaro in the garage. She don't like it? She can walk.

People in general these days (men and women alike) are pretty superficial and somewhat dim and don't see value in nostalgia. Opinions come from idiot friends, the TV and anything pop related. THey don't appreciate the work that goes into something like art, or a vintage car.

I just "yeah yeah" until I get my way, then once hooked, we take my car, like it or not. To hell with what your GF's and idiot boy-friends think about it. They can KMA- they are usually morons who only understand the latest crap they see on TV or FB.
