Did DB Cooper Survive ?
It is possible he survived at the time. The FBI only found a fraction of the money and did not find his remains or the bomb he had jumped with.

I'm saying no. The difficulties of surviving the jump into wild, forested terrain in winter, and then getting to civilization dressed in loafers and slacks. None of the 10,000 $20 bills have ever been found in circulation.
I don't have a hard time thinking a man dressed in black, with an unopened parachute, could plummet into deep forest and decompose undiscovered. He'd be around 80 y/o now, so if he is alive and wants to announce himself, it'll not be long now. |

I think maybe he did. Of course, he could've gotten snagged at the top of a 100ft pine tree and died of exposure in those woods. They are very thick and the weather in November is bitterly cold at night. He would have wanted to have had an accomplice waiting on the ground nearby to collect him. The Lewis River region is truly beautiful, but I wouldn't want to be running around in those forests at night, in winter without any gear.
There's a little bar nearby, a mile or two out of Ariel where he's alleged to have jumped. The roof is adorned with parachutes and there's lots of memorabilia, mostly newspaper clippings, photos and $20 bills, purporting to be his loot. They all have a good laugh about it. ![]() The beer is frosty and once a week they do $1 Tacos...

I always hoped he did, but I think we would have had some of the cash show up sometime, so I doubt he did, did they ever figure out who he actually was??

I think he lived but is dead now. I read a write up last year about a guy who fit the bill. Google should turn it up. Seemed more than plausible.
I do know that in the 1980's some of the money turned up on the bank of the Columbia River. I love a good mystery. Larry Edit: I just checked up on the story mentioned above. Who knows? Crazy crack pot? Not much evidence. After reading I don't have an opinion either way. Last edited by LWJ; 03-17-2013 at 07:44 PM.. |

I saw a documentary on the whole thing a year or two ago, where they posited that he had died in the jump and his chute got tangled in a barge propeller in the Columbia River, which was subsequently dredged. And that was how they figured that old muddy cash showed up buried north of where he supposedly landed.

Mt St Helens eruption erased any evidence, possibly buried his body and the remaining cash.

I hope the case is never definitively solved. Some area legends should remain legendary.

Hey Paul! We agree 100%!
Rick, as for the dredging, my father worked for the Corps of Engineers his entire career. He worked in the dredging operations in Portland. He was interviewed regarding this same theory. I forgot what his thougts are on this but looking at the bills? I say no way did they run through an impeller. I think they would be damaged in a different way. All good fun! Larry |

I didn't say anything got run through an impeller, just that his body could have been dragged way upstream if the chute was hung up on a ship. I think the show I saw even had an animated diagram that showed another boat grabbing onto the chute and ripping it away from the first boat and taking down a tributary.

I think he survived the jump. Most of the documentaries and tv shows on this seem to think he had some type of jump training, most likely military. He also had a working knowledge of this type of jet and the speed they needed to go to get to his jump point and survive. I think the D.B. Cooper name was a reporter mistake and his fake name was really put down as Dan Cooper and not D.B.
If I had to put forth a best guess on who D.B. was, he was probably either Kenneth Christiansen or Richard Floyd McCoy, Jr. They seem to be the most likely suspects this many years latter. The story would make a good movie.
