The epic drought of 2011 did a lot of damage. Millions of dead trees, lost crops, dead cattle, etc. etc. Parts of East TX got some reprieve in 2012 but most of the state, if not still in extreme drought conditions is heading that way and the long range forecast is more drought. One of the main drivers of the current economic boom is the Eagle Ford, Barnett and soon to be Cline Shale plays for oil/gas. Unfortunately all these areas are drought prone, currently in extreme drought and as fracking takes massive amounts of water which will come from where ??

The worst drought was the near 7 year drought in the 1950s when the population was probably 20% of what it is now. If this drought even approaches that one?

As the article says, the weather here can be brutal. I've lived here 67 years and seen tornadoes, dust storms that turned the sky red, hail the size of softballs, hurricane force winds, severe droughts, and huge flash floods.

The state passed a 50 year water plan I believe it was back the the 1990s which was designed to assure TX water supplies. Unfortunately, the legislature didn't seem to realize you actually have to fund these things (not to mention being bogged down with such emergency legislation over the years as voter ID, stopping planned parenthood funding, being sure only abstinence is taught in sex ed classes and all those other social problems we have. But fear not, they just passed to bill to start some funding of water projects, of course they will take years to implement. Hell, they may even do something about highway funding one of these days instead of just defaulting to toll roads.

This could turn into a real rant so stop I will....

This thread is a load of azz. I was raised there only to see Dallas vote blue in the last election.

Here is a dose of reality: Texas will move left because the people moving there will bring their own failed policies from other states. The honest working people will fail to join in politically and will be ruled by their inferiors. You heard it here first.

Yes, my life in Texas sucks. The housing is horrible.

I live in the desert.

And it's flat, arid, and boring.

Please don't come here.

My wife's sister and her husband just bought a house in DFW, I was amazed how much you can get for your money there.

It's the dismal tide, Brother. The worst of humanity is being nurtured...and it's happening all over.

Anyone considering moving to Texas, please leave your Liberal crap at the border. We do not want to turn into another Colorado. There is a reason for the success in Texas. It is up to YOU to get by.

Some complain about lower wages, but the cost of living is also very low. Between Houston and Katy, in good areas with good school districts, you can find 2000+ sq. foot houses for just over $100K. While we do not get the year round fresh veggies at the quality level of California, we do have very low food prices.

And if you want to live still cheaper? You can move out to the country and buy a few acres for under $10K/acre. Put up a doublewide until you can afford to build a house and you're in for $50K, including well and septic tank.

This is what happens when you are not taxed and regulated to death. Let's keep it that way.

I got here as soon as I could...makes me a Damn Yankee!

I have slept in 49 states (never been to Alaska and IMO it isn't a state!) and if I had a choice of any of them to live in - and I pretty much do - I still would choose Tejas hands down.

Those that live in Cali do so for the weather and ...hmmm...can't see any other reason really...nice place to visit for a few days but pretty much every one I talk to there is always telling me their amazing life or their great plans and ideas and how awesome they are and how they are on to something big and that what they are doing now is a stepping stone. Amazing.

Don't they know I'm the one they are supposed to think is awesome and don't they know I'm the one they should be focused on! Geeezzzz ;-)

Texas is right not because of politics, we have not always been a red state, the state has prospered with democrats in the office as well as republicans.

When I lived in Dallas as a kid, there was a popular bumper sticker than read, "Love NY? Take I-30 East."

With all it's oil and cattle money, I always wondered why Texas wasn't a better state. When I lived there the education system was terrible and I think it still ranks pretty low. I won the Bee County hIstory award (multi-school competition) not by getting the most answers correct but by finding two mistakes on the test. We moved to MA soon after.
