However from a US point of view she was undoubtedly a great Prime Minister. No question.

From a domestic POV she will remain as devisive in death as she was in life.

Funnily enough I have been thinking about joining the Conservative Party recently. Today has been a reminder of why I never have.
Then let it be so. I'd appreciate hearing your views. Let the wankers wank.

Yeah, I'm not going to be able to handle the extra mouse click if this goes to PARF. Sheesh.

Yeah sorry about that, got a bit touchy for a second.

You would think that some folks would have enough class to keep their derisive comments out of memorial to honor a person's life. Funnily (is that really a word?), in PARF there are those that make comments at inappropriate times. Worse still, one throws a cheap shot out there in PPOT but then hides behind the "it would be PARF if I continue".
May you not have someone make low-brow comments about your life at a memorial service attended by your friends or family.

Met her in 2001 when she gave an impromptu lecture to one of my college courses on British Empire... 12 students, our professor, three guys from scotland yard. Outside the building about a dozen very vocal protesters. A very engaging speaker and certainly someone who made a mark on history.

What, by saying she was a wonderful destroyer of communities? How hurtful.

Get a grip and grow up a bit. Love her or hate her, Thatchers policies hurt millions of people including my own family and she had no sympathy for any of them. Her policies destroyed hundres of communities and nearly a whole industrial base of a country in favour of a rise of the banks. Where did that get us?

Her foreign policy was first class, she managed to use a foreign crisis (The Falklands) to her distinct advantage, got elected on the back of it and carried on to domestically destroy and divide more of a country until even her own henchmen had enough of her.

You think she was perfect? Even David Cameron started last night by saying 'although I didn't agree with all her policies'..

The country was heading to be a Socialist state before she took over. She firstly had to reverse that and that meant some jobs went to wrest the control from the unions who deliberately had destroyed most of our industrial base in cahoots with the Labour Governments misguided attempts to strengthen the steel, car and aircraft industries by forcing unwilling firms to form large conglomerations . The solid industries went on to prosper.
As for the re-unification of Germany, her assessment was somewhat parrallel with that of De Gaulle who said that he loved Germany so much that he was glad there were two of them!

Despised up here.
Street party held in Glasgow to celebrate her passing.
MP quoting 'stamp the dirt down'
My opinion, she was good for southern England but everyone else ended up paying for it.
After being made redundant for the 2nd time at the age of 18, I won't loose any sleep over her.

Maggie had those who loved her and those who hated her - and probably many in between. be that as it may.....she was an inspiring world leader - something sorely missed in this day and age.

As one who does not like big government - I will always be a fan.

She broke a lot of barriers for women. All the lefties who hate her for union busting might want to consider that.

I recall a statement that she allegedly (but probably didn't) make after first becoming prime minister. She took her entire cabinet out to a restaurant (supposedly Rules) and ordered roast beef. When the waiter asked "what about the vegetables?" she replied: "They'll have what I'm having".

One statement she did make I've always loved: "The problem with socialism is that sooner or later you run out of other peoples money".

But she NEVER elected a woman to her cabinet, nor supported any other woman in politics.

Ridiculous to think of a thread about a dead politician as a memorial service, where you aren't allowed to say negative things.

Any of you "fans" lived in Europe at the time? Maybe even as a young person? Your POV may be slightly different then. I was there in the 80s and all I remember is a typical cold-war government head: radical privatization, war games with Argentinia, poll tax (the Scots were the guinea pigs) and the strong opposition to German reunification. IMHO, just like Helmut Kohl having jumped the shark in Germany, a two-term limit like we have it in the US would have served Britain quite well ...

Britain was never more respected abroad than under Maggie. Nobody is perfect, but she excelled at foreign policy and even taught the Queen and thing or two.
