This man does not like Maggie. What should this say to us?

Do you know me? Of course you don't. I can guarantee I have had less of 'other peoples money' than you have had in your miserable, hate filled excuse for an existence.

With years to reflect back on Mr Adams and his ilk Doug. Perhaps a Prime Minister who was prepared to treat the IRA as a political organisation might have been better for both the UK and Ireland.
Think about the hunger strikers in the eighties. There only request was to be treated as political prisoners. Maggie stoked the troubles for years with that one.

Coal mines, steelworks, ship-building and basically all heavy engineering paid the price.
Approx 50% of Scotland's manufacturing was gone within 4 years of her leadership. Plants that were efficient and profitable were sacrificed to allow others where votes talked remain open. As a nation we used to make things and have pride in doing so, now it's a shadow with the local authorities being the main employers - or call centres. Agree the unions had become too powerful - and needed brought back into line but there's ways and means. I left school in times where hungar strikers were dying, it was almost like civil war local to me in a mining comunity. Coal is now imported and local mining communities have never recovered. Energy policies based on the price of coal and completely forgetting to add the social cost to the equation. She was very lucky the timing of the Falklands which without she would never have won a 2nd term. And once she got her hands on North Sea Oil revenue - she stole the gold from under our feet. Dispise that woman - but it gave me an extra reason to enjoy my wee dram on Monday. Sorry for the rant - around here it's still a sore point 30 years later. |

when asked what her legacy was, she said: "Tony Blair" -- think about it |

Sounds like pretty common sense policy to me.

A certain song from the Wizard of Oz is rising near the top on iTunes following Thatcher's death:
'Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead' could reach number one following Margaret Thatcher's death - News - Music - The Independent

G'day!

Live and let live I say - I understand that no politician can please everyone - that's cool.
But if you want to start a hatred/dislike thread --- --- go for it --- --- but please leave this one for those who regard The Iron Lady in high regard and are mourning her death. It's all about respect. Give it ----- and you will get it. Thanks in advance.

![]() It's amusing to read these Reagan worshipping, knee jerk, right wing whacko's responses to comments made by those of you who actually lived under that wretched woman's administration. However, you do realize that you are educating none of them, no? ![]()

You cannot lay all the violence and bloodshed on the IRA.
There was plenty of unofficially sanctioned violence on the side of the UVF and other loyalist paramilitary units. And the police. And the occupational army. The government did nothing to reel this in, as it served their interests.

quite true
you have to ask yourselves 2 questions re economics: 1. would you want to go back to pre-Thatched England? (not just the 20% inflation, the whole thing) 2. could the problems have been solved is some other way (some kinder, gentler way I guess) I also see that our resident Hayek scholar didn't pick up on my previous remark... |

As a Yank, I find it interesting that those who lived under Thatcher tend to scorn her while she has avid fans here across the pond. That makes me think that the kind regards are based upon a superficial knowledge of her, and one that draws power from the notion of "walk softly and carry a big stick" outlook. She was certainly came to power with a mess on her hands but tearing things down always easier than slow purposeful adjustment and fine tuning.
As for the Falklands.. seriously? Should Spain come and try and go for Key West now? How many nations could lay claim to Pensacola FL? Or St. Augustine? Toughness does not always equate with good leadership if it is misplaced. But tough talk makes people "feel" good... liken it to Jingoism, a misperception of Patriotism. In the end, I wonder why those who cherish her memory, not as a "person" but as a leader do so..?? |
