Wasnt the liberator. The gun they dropped out of planes to the French resistance. Smooth bore. This reminds me of the gun from malkovich movie with Clint Eastwood.

This has to be a concern with airplanes. No

Well, "The cat's out of the bag" now.

Certainly an interesting engineering achievement but how many rounds could you fire before blows up in your hand?

Like the original WWII Liberator, how many do you need to shoot?

Cartridge is still metal. Airport screening will pick it out in seconds.

There are plastic pistol/rifle cases... use a glass marble for the bullet. Maybe plan on single shot, so you have a black powder wad/pellet that is ignited by a strike anywhere match head superglued to the head of the firing pin.

TSA raised a ruckus about my brother's folding frying pan, but said nothing about the two disassembled guns!

I want one of these printers. But as soon as people start to get killed by these printed guns the feds will make them as illeagal as fully automatic weapons. Simple as that.

more here....

BBC News - Working gun made with 3D printer

Its a neat project, and this guy is obviously very talented, but as many of the people commenting on the article have said, it might have been a better use of his time to produce a water pump. Or surgical tools / artificial joints / prosthetic limbs etc etc... I'm sure there are loads of things that remote poor places could make good use of.

This guy has done us all a favor by pointing out the potential danger early on.

I might be making this up but I seem to recall the liberator was intended as a means to get a better gun. Not really the same concept.

The news reports that the gun fired 8 shots before it stopped working.

I don't see much difference between finding how to make a bomb on the net or making a gun on a 3D printer.

The game always changes, nothing stays still for long.

That was fast

Making guns with 3D printers would be illegal under bill planned by Sen. Schumer - NewsChannel 9 WSYR

yea but politicians don't get that u can already make your own firearms with minimal tools. and it's completely legal under ATF law.

not to mention it's cheaper to build a real gun than it is to buy a 3d printer and make 1 shot 380acp plastic guns.

since when did it take a 3d printer to make a gun?

the british sten gun was made in homes all across england to prevent the factory from being bombed during the blitz.

I think the issue is that its plastic and can foil security checkpoints, and takes little skill to produce, once you have the build data.

why wouldn't they just design the thing to have a plastic body and a smooth bore barrel that can be made from steel? That might make it harder to sneak into an airport, but also much more reliable.
