"MERS-CoV appears to have originated in bats. It is likely that a single variant from bats crossed over to an intermediate animal host species (at least in the Middle East), however, and subsequently infected the human population."
There is a lethal strain of "bird flu" going on in China now too, 35 dead to date and developing drug resistance, but so far seems to be contracted from birds rather than human-to-human transmission. Drug resistance in new China bird flu raises concern | Reuters
