In Barcelona they speak Catalan, not Spanish. Spanish is used, but the signage is in Catalan. I found Barcelona tedious.

Bear in mind that the summer would be very hot in many Med destinations - especially in a city - so that would rule out many in my mind. And anything coastal will be very, very busy in August. Semi-rural France or Northern Spain would get my vote except for the transport issue. I would want a car.

If you're going to do this - and I think it's a great idea - make it worth doing and don't make it TOO comfortable. England seems pointless, and a tourist Mecca like Paris seems just as bad. I liked the comment "see how the other 80% live." I'm going to India in a couple weeks and it will be my first time outside of the "western world." I think that idea is important - break out of the western world and experience something truly different. It could be an amazing experience for your family. Perhaps even life changing.

Interlaken Switzerland:
Interlaken Holiday Region - Vacation, Holiday, Travel - Bernese Oberland, Switzerland - Interlaken Tourismus Breathtaking scenery, safe, lots of outdoor activities for kids, easy train ride to the top of the Alps or a quick trip to France, Belgium, Germany. They mostly speak German but are often fluent in English, French, and Italian. I have been throughout much of Europe and I am not sure I would drop off my wife and kids in Paris or Budapest. Both beautiful cities but maybe better for HS age kids and up.

Excellent idea Cajundaddy. And the architecture was not damaged in WWII. Lots to do in that area and I think you can still ski on the Glacier.

No place in Europe is going to be kid friendly, but for me? No question, Florence Italy.
Of course I am a bit biased since I lived there as a student. ![]()

I knew I could count on ppot! Great ideas. England is too easy. Paris may be as well. I am going to show this to Mrs LWJ.

I remember when I was 9 yo back in the 1950's . My parents took me to Spain mostly inland. I did not appreciate it. I think kids of the ages you have need water. Swimming, seaworld, things that are fun and not necessarily educational.
Ask them what they like. Do they like the water, fishing, amusement rides, animals or what? Have an open mind about it. Canada eh? Well it has lots of water but it is still on the cold side in the water.Mind you I love seeing the wild animals particularly in the mountains -bears,deer, moose, etc etc but you cannot expect to see them when you want to. I would have liked to see wild animals at a young age. Have a family discussion so they can all have input. ![]() The fishing trips with my father when I was young still bring me good memories. If you go to far off countries don't expect your children to like the food. My father used to take corn flakes to Spain in the 1950's! |
