The garbage man encounters an especially foul can.
Knowing it's his job, he holds his breath and empties as quickly as possible.
The next week, he's a bit more accepting .. but he still holds his breath.

lawyers defend known criminals, polluters, govt. agencies that clearly broke the law, banks driving people from their homes with trumped up robo-signings, etc.

the justice system requires it - the judge or jury decides

Right.

I see your point Vinny and on a human level I am sure the defense lawyers feel as repulsed about these monsters as any of us. I guess they go into pro mode much like many doctors, certainly in the surgical field, where the patient to some extent become of body that need a certain procedure that is performed by reflex after a while in the trade. Its a limping comparison of course, but sometimes you need to put a mental distance between your feeling mind and the object of work at hand.

Also, I guess at least the high profile cases will probably not hurt a career as far as ending up in the head lines.

You could if we got rid of the death penalty and adopted the near death penalty.

The part in the Bill of Rights where everyone is entitled to a fair trial is a plague on this country? I realize the constitution has been somewhat under siege lately - but to actually start attacking the 6th is something sort of new...

Vinny I'm with you. But I'm also the guy that couldn't live with myself for killing an animal to show I'm a man. Actually I don't need to.

He got a long stupid expensive trial. Everyone with brains agree that is his RIGHT. There is no way to write a law that would make exceptions to that right. I still think we should have cut him up for usable body parts. That can't happen so we follow the constitution.

I couldn't, which is why I no longer practice law after 14 years. In my experience there is little honor, dignity and justice remaining in the justice system. It's all about money. But there are plenty of careers that make me wonder how anyone can live with themselves. IMO, these careers include most law enforcement, bankers, securities brokers, corporate officers, military personnel and politicians to name just a few.

Yes, they can. It's called the Patriot Act. All it requires is the designation of the suspect as a "terrorist." But don't worry its for the good of America.

On Les' theme though, this is why the entire concept of prison "rehabilitation" is flawed. There are some crimes that simply require a person to be off in some way, because no normal person would even consider them no matter the situation. Someone robbing a liquor store, smoking crack, getting into a fight, you can understand the motivation even if it is flawed. But a normal human being does not rape an infant or blow up a building.

No. I wouldn't be able to go home feeling like I had made a positive impact to society.
