Eisen IMS Settlement

Anybody else get the subject settlement notice in the mail recently? Is this for real or BS? I haven't experienced an IMS failure, but if this is real, for those who have seems like a potential way to recover storm $$ if it goes through.

Considering today's society, I always assume these things are a scam.

My dad got one. We had an RMS replaced under warranty but no IMS troubles.

I got one for a past 996. It is only 25% reimbursement for a normal used car. Higher rates apply for new buyers or CPO cars.

Got it today. Limits to cars which have less than 130k miles or 10 ten years since first "in service" date. Whichever is first. So my 02' is SOL.

I got the letter yesterday but unfortunately I wrapped my 997S around a light pole last year before any IMS issues

IMS Settlement

Just got off the phone with Porsche. Seems my 997 falls into the IMS failure division. Unfortunately, it appears that since I am the second owner, without the ACPO extended warranty, the settlement would only cover 25% of the cost of repairs. From what I hear, this can be catastrophic....... as in the range of $20,000. I was looking into the IMS retrofit, and wasn't sure what to do. If it fails and my motor scatters, $20,000 in repairs. Porsche sends me $5,000. $15,000 lesson. IMS repair kit plus labor $1,500. Am I missing something here? If not, my kit will be on order.........

My wife and I got our application materials yesterday. I did not have an IMS issue, so no payout for us.

Do some more research on the topic gzman. I have owned five M96 equipped Porsches and haven't worried about it, all were on the original IMS. It does happen but is relatively rare. Though with that said, $1500 relative to the value of a nice 997 is much easier to swallow than $1500 relative to the value of a $10k used Boxster.

This seems curious to me. Porsche will pay you $5000 if your engine blows up, but YOU have to pay $1500 to prevent it from blowing up? It seems to me Porsche ought to be beating down your door to get you to let them put the retrofit in for free. Unless ... the profit on a new engine is more that $5000.

WDfifteen, I agree that would be right thing to do, however the most profitable car company in the world would not remain there by doing such good deeds. (if they were smart they would, but it would also set a precedent for other "engineering easter eggs") I guess they would rather wait to get sued before admitting an ENGINEERING FLAW and owning up to it. I had my IMS fail as I was approaching my driveway, heard it and shut it down in time to have the LN Engineering retro fit kit installed. The option to upgrade it, even at your expense, is a no brainer to me...It must be done, they will all fail, but when?

The 997 is far less subject to IMS failure than the 996, and it's rare in 996s.

Call me skeptical about the LN solution. What's the failure rate of LN IMSs vs Porsche IMSs?

No, it's about probability. $1500 x every M96 engine sold is far more money than $5000 x every M96 engine sold x IMS failure rate. The failure rate is low enough that it doesn't pay for Porsche to go to the field with a recall campaign.
