You haven't live until you have hugged a polar bear... just be sure to buy them a couple beers first.

I don't go hug people unless they approach me, but if they do, no problem. I do hug close friends and family.

That said - it is an absolute no-no in the work place. There I would stick my hand out and back off. Nothing good can come from it in a professional setting.

Also, I find it funny as mentioned, how some women 'hug', putting cheek on cheek and a faint pat on the back without any body contact. Might as well forget about it. I think they try to avoid their breasts touching? They do not only behave like that with men, but also other women. Very very strange ...

Hugs!

My oldest brother was just in town for a visit. He had a heart attack earlier this year. I gave him a hug when we parted. I would have hugged him anyway - without the heart attack.

I have no problem hugging when the occasion is appropriate, but am VERY selective - which makes my hugs so special.

She is Thai? If she said that, as the Thais are unfailingly polite, you were just ***** slapped. A bow and traditional wai greeting would have gone awfully long way.

On a related subject, when did it become appropriate/the norm to kiss women on first meeting or introduction?

I hug friends and family, at least the ones I care about.
Since my mom passed away a few months ago, I started hugging my dad every time we say goodbye.
For me a hug says I care.

Prefer a firm handshake over a limp cold moist flappy hand too....

It did seem unpolite at first, but I soon found that her parents speak their mind and my family does too so I was used to it. By the end of my visit I had the bow and sa-wa-dee-cup greeting down pat . Her father seemed to like me just fine and I think that counts more with her.

They only do it if they know each other really well or if related.
You don't go around kissing "acquaintances" in France.

I would like to note that svandamme used the word "y'all" and did it with style. I would give him a hug for that.

Same here.
It might be a NY/NJ cultural thing. Hugging is pretty common here. Especially among us of Eyetalyun descent.

As far as the dead fish handshake. If you are not gonna put effort into shaking my hand, dont bother.

I wouldn't hug a stranger even if I've had sex with them. I like to maintain my personal space.
