A Tale of two 1992's

I recently sold my 1992 911 Turbo to purchase the house I have been renting since my divorce. While I didn't want to sell it, the time was right both in the selling prices of 964T's and the housing market in Fort Collins. On the plus side the 911 did appreciate it while I owned it so that was nice....

I have been without a "fun" car about 5 months now (my 1966 Mustang is in storage on the lift in the garage so that doesn't count) and have been looking on and off for something fun to drive to the airport and commute in (I posted a thread a while ago about using a 944 as a DD).

Fast forward to a few weeks ago and a friend of mine's son called saying he would like to sell his 1992 Mustang LX 5.0, after discussing it with him, I purchased it. I have worked on the car on and off over the past couple of years and its a rust free 2 owner car with 120K on it.

I started typing out a big comparison, but there really isn't one. My 911 cost over $100K in 1992, and the Mustang was around $16K give or take.

There is a definite difference wrenching on the two of them, especially on the interior.

There is also a definite difference in buying parts for them.

The Mustang makes me feel 18 again and more like a holligan than the Porsche did.

In summary, the differences in engineering / materials and overall feeling of the two is very interesting. So are the comments I get from non car people, "Oh I see you got another red sports car".

Over the years I have had a few 911's and a few Mustang's, I like them both, and I will drive this one for a while, maybe tweek it to about 400 hp and just have fun. Another 911 is in my future, and who knows, probably another Mustang.

Very cool. It's a notchback right? I always loved that bodystyle of 5.0, much better than the longer and less subtle GT.

Its a hatchback, which works better for me with my hockey gear, and suitcases etc.

I know, all the pictures are on my phone. I just got done epoxing some parts for the console, so I will upload the pictures from my phone tonight and add them.

The paint definitely needs some love, and I have a new cat back exhaust, Ford Racing Pressure plate/clutch/flywheel/throw out bearing and rear main seal ready to install this weekend hopefully.

I think this is what makes us all enthusiasts. We can appreciate any car for what it is.....doesn't just have to have a high price tag. Heck...people look at me like I'm crazy bcz I've got an old Cherokee with big tires....and I LOVE IT! Buying parts is like shopping at the dollar store.....probably a lot like the mustang.

I also want a fox body (notchback) to add to my collection. A nice clean build.....those cars are great.

And yeah.....where are the pictures???!!!

The old 964 turbo hadn't even reached its investment potential.
They are skyrocketing.
Dunno about the Fort Collins housing market. : )

I know it hadn't creaturecat, but the timing for the owner selling the house wasn't really negitiable and I got it for about $40K less than a comparable one in the neighborhood, so I figured the amount I was giving up in the car I was more than making up in the house.

Plus, it went to a really good guy in Indy that liked the mods and was going to use them as a baseline for more.

I habve tried uploading pictures from my iPhone to my latop but stupid Win 7 isn't seeing the pictures..ugh.

I agree, I definitely prefer the cleaner look of the LX over the GT.

Good looking car. Much better looking than a GT. A neighbor of mine has an old 90s GT. It's white, he's done some minor body or paint work all over the car, and topped it off with black paint or primer. It looks like hell.

I had a buddy that had something in the '88-92 range back in the mid 90s. He had done a bunch of work to it. It looked, sounded and went pretty well. It was a fun ride for sure

Agreed. Now for my latest axiom....

Car guys can be car snobs at times, but a car snob can never be a car guy.

Also, you can never explain the 90/10 rule to car snobs. Meaning that it's 90% driver and 10% equipment at the end of the day.

That is a nice looking driver. It is getting harder and harder to find one that hasn't been JC Whitneyed to death or redneck riced out. Enjoy it like it was meant to be enjoyed.

A Mustang 5.0 was one of the "it" cars to have growing up (until vanilla ice came along ) I had an 83 Convertible and really liked it. Paid next to nothing for it, fixed it up and made a good profit. I still would like to find an SVO or 87-88 Mustang GT.

Nice ride. I had an '88 base notchback. Brand new $12,800 back in the day. I wish I still had it. Like another poster said, they had the cleaner look and all the go of the GT but mine has the crummy 4cyl seats.

Enjoy it for what it is.
