Ok, fine. If you are going to argue the fact she needed to break out of that mold of Disney girl, fine. I get it, sex sells. But if you are gonna go that route, there is actually a way to do it where you can maintain some kind of respect. Rock and roll, music, MTV, known for sexuality. But there are ways to exude sexuality without looking like a freak. Britney Spears: nude body suit with diamond like accents... Sexy, shocking, risqué, but not over the top. Sensual, not crass shaking booty hanging out of nude colored short shorts while running a foam finger between your thighs with dancing teddy bears around you. Instead of portraying a sensual woman, making yourself one with the music, entrancing the audience, you make them repel, not even hear the music, and wonder if you accidentally turned to the weird fetish channel. Do you see my point? There are a lot of females musicians that use their sex appeal to sell their music: Shakira, Beyonce, even Pink. But there is a way to do it and not end up making yourself into a freakshow. Miley is a pretty girl. They could have made her sexy, not raunchy. And mind you, I am not attacking Miley. She's only 20. Where was her agent? Where are her parents? Heck, where are the MTV executives? I think Miley will survive this but honestly, this could have been done in such a different way.

^^^ All good but,

What does it take to get noticed nowadays?

Lady GaGa being a case in point. She has done just about anything to get famous.
Madonna did the same 30 years ago... Remember her sex book?

The "Plushy" thing is weird but we're all talking about her so guess what. Mission accomplished.

There had to be at least dozens of people involved in the planning of that "thing" plus all the dancing bears and TV ex's etc..... How did that "thing" get from concept to reality without somebody with any brains or class pulling the plug? Horrible....ALL of it,

And it will keep going on. She may opt for a 'settled-down' style someday but this is getting her plenty of talk. If she was to land a movie deal it would bust blocks right now. She is trending which means her name is gaining traction which means she is becoming very relevent in pop culture. You may not agree and you most likely are repulsed by her act but its working for what any celeb wants and thats to trend.

Look what far less talent has done to get noted - Paris, Kim...they really have zero talent in anything except daddys money and some bad porn (you could get better skull from a $50 stripper) and the fact that many men find them hot. All it took was sex. And yet they are banking it...

Yes, tweez, I agree - it could have been done better. Much better. And if it was done better I would think that she would be able to expand her audience. Look at Wayne Newton! Ya, he's square but the dude banks more than many with serious legs in the business. His demographic is stronger than the tween/teen that the ex-disneys...

Her agent and MTV executives are ecstatic about the way it's playing out. Look at all the buzz! It worked perfectly. Welcome to America.

She'll "fake recover" from this "fake faux pas" and we'll pat her on the back for her 'fake strength' down the road.

The only thing more scripted is Politics, which some of you here also mistakenly think is real.

^^^ What Jeremy said.

"However other critics praised the performance, including Billboard's Bill Werde and Rolling Stone's Rob Sheffield, who said: "Miley stole the night".

Cyrus appears to be unaffected by the criticism, tweeting: "My VMA performance had 306,000 tweets per minute. That's more than the blackout or Superbowl!"

Music industry sources say the former Disney star can expect a sales boost of between 10 and 20% as a result. Her new album, Bangerz, is due for release in October but has been climbing the digital charts based on pre-orders alone, while her single We Can't Stop is in the top five in both the UK and North America."

I don't think it's real and I understand our entertainment industry nowadays. I wasn't necessarily asking those questions to say that they would stop her. Those questions actually speak directly to your point. EXACTLY! They let it happen because of the mighty dollar. And I am not saying just because I think so, this is going to stop it from happening but it just makes me sad. But like I said, it exists and it's going to whether or not I like it.

BUT I have to say I don't play into it consciously. The only reason why I know about it is because of this thread, because I can't get away from it on the Internet. I don't have TV. I don't watch the Kardashians. I don't buy US Weekly.

I agree with you. We get what we ask for. I think it probably says more about us than Miley.

There were just so many things wrong with that performance.

Forgoing that it was offensive to some and probably not appropriate for a wide audience it was a terrible terrible performance.

The choreographer should have been fired, the costume designer fired, her dance instructor banned from ever working again.

It was awful.

point - she will be fine as will anyone and everyone that watched. If there is anyone who will be jaded by or influenced by her gyrations then they will be swayed by a strong breeze or a soda can.

Lets place things in perspective...short of actual harm (where blood is involved) pretty much all things are fair game now...think of the alternative for a moment...

My 10 year old could care less about her performance - she watch a few seconds, laughed and said it was stupid and walked away. My 14 yr old son watched longer (for the obvious reasons) and said 'Wow! What a skank!' and walked away as well. Niether kid buys her music on itunes. Not because of our boycot - because its not appealing to them.

In other words, she has 0 direct ecomonic influence in our home...

That performance was taken directly from each of their videos. The VMA didn't create that from .... scratch.

ugh, after typing that, I need me some shower.

Good point.

I just checked out Miley's video and the VMA performance mimics it right down to the teddy bears.

So how much does that guy have to pay Marvin Gaye's estate for screwing up his song so badly?

Glad I don't watch much TV.

Madonna used shock and sex as her marketing machine for years. Miley is probably using her play book, if she had brains enough to do so

It is my fervent wish that the Miley Cyrus Butt Tourniquet(TM) does not 'catch on.'
