Something I don't fully understand about the draft strategy, among the many things I don't understand about football: why does a player want to be a #1 pick? Doesn't that just mean he goes to the absolute worst team? How about being a #6-10 pick and going to a team that isn't absymal? The rookie contract is largely the same for #1 as for #10, right?

VincentVega 04-21-2015 05:08 PM

Not really, here are 2014 #'s

Pk Player Pos. Team Status Contract
1 Jadeveon Clowney DE Houston Texans Signed 4 years, $22.272M fully guaranteed; $14.518M signing bonus
2 Greg Robinson OT St. Louis Rams Signed 4 years
3 Blake Bortles QB Jacksonville Jaguars Signed 4 years, $20.6M fully guaranteed
4 Sammy Watkins WR Buffalo Bills Signed 4 years, $19.94M fully guaranteed; $12.8M signing bonus
5 Khalil Mack OLB Oakland Raiders Signed 4 years, $18.67M fully guaranteed; $11.90M signing bonus
6 Jake Matthews OT Atlanta Falcons Signed 4 years, $16.43M fully guaranteed; $10.27M signing bonus
7 Mike Evans WR Tampa Bay Buccaneers Signed 4 years, $14.6M fully guaranteed; $8.96M signing bonus
8 Justin Gilbert CB Cleveland Browns Signed No details yet
9 Anthony Barr OLB Minnesota Vikings Signed 4 years, $12.74M fully guaranteed; $7.58M signing bonus
10 Eric Ebron TE Detroit Lions Signed

In short, ~22m down to 13m guaranteed 1-10 so a huge difference.

With his arms and legs, Tebow helped lead Florida to BCS national championships in 2006 and '08.

In 2007, he became the first sophomore to win the Heisman Trophy and the first player in major college football history to run and pass for 20 touchdowns in the same season.

In his four-year career, Tebow passed for more than 9,000 yards with 88 touchdowns and ran for nearly 3,000 yards with 57 scores.

Tim is a proven winner and competitor.

Like I said, Tim is finally on an NFL squad with an excellent head coach. I'm excited and optimistic. :)

Career NFL statistics as of 2014
TD–INT: 17–9
Passing yards: 2,422
Passer rating: 75.3
Rushing yards: 989
Rushing TDs: 12

Great college player, maybe one of the best. End of story.

IMO Winston is a problem and that problem is written all over his face when he screws up. It's the blank look of someone who is trying to avoid accountability as fast and hard as he can. Watch for it. Wide-eyed, mouth open, big pupils...the kid needs personal help and the NFL is merciless.

He has every attribute of an NFL failure story. Extremely talented, extremely poor decision making, never takes responsibility for his own actions. Giving someone like that more fame and more money is just adding fuel to the fire. I understand the value that is put on the QB position, but is that really what you want in a franchise player? Especially considering that Mariota is his polar opposite in every way.

I haven't read this whole thread, but I did read something a month or two ago that said that Tebow had been working for months with a well-respected quarterback trainer to fix his mechanics. Evidently Tebow's throwing motion (and especially his release) sucked. Another analysis back when he was still active in the NFL was the fact that he was bog slow.

I don't agree with Tebow's "personal philosophy" so to speak, but I do wish him the best. He's a genuine good guy, I think. He certainly has the right attitude.

Doesn't Tebow have a NFL Playoff victory or two with Denver?

The Jets deal was just all wrong.

That is pretty much my feelings. He does indeed seem to be a good guy and will not be one of the many NFL thugs out on the town driving drunk of beating his wife or girlfriend. The only measure of a how good he really is will be his ability to win. Even the best quarterback ever can't win with a bad team. If indeed he is a good as his promoters want him to be his talent will show. If not he will just fade away like so many other former NFL players.

I don't watch organized sports nor do I care but I did read about him training with a coach, good luck to him.

The vast majority of what is called "sports" on TV is just a game. I too have a tough time getting real wound up about a group a men playing with their balls. Be it golf to basketball or bowling, it is just a game if a ball is involved. And Hockey and Badminton is just using a funny shaped ball.

Watching a real sport like the marathon is real darn boring. Shorter races are better but there is a ton of set up time and a 10 second race.

Racing with the manufacturers bringing cars of different engineers working to make their entry have the edge and then doing it for 12 or 24 hours and not break is a real sport, even when Porsche does not win. I like F1 but they need some rules changes to make it more competitive.

biosurfer1 04-22-2015 06:11 AM

But look at all his college stats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That"s got to mean he is a great NFL QB!!!!!!! No one has ever done well in college that didn't translate to the NFL!!!!!!

VincentVega 04-22-2015 06:21 AM

I think you are right. He's such a nice guy!

He won one playoff game against the Steelers, on a catch-and-run TD pass.

The Broncos then got dismantled by the Patriots the next week, in classical Belicheck fashion.

When Tebow was in high school, he got tackled in the 2nd quarter and got up with an obvious limp. The coach tried to take him out of the game but he said he was OK.
He stayed in the game and ran 28 yards for the game-winning touchdown, with a fractured fibula.

Tim Tebow is scoring big during the off-season.

In its first year, the Tim Tebow Foundation –- which brings hope to orphans and kids battling life threatening diseases –- far surpassed its original fundraising goals, the Daily reports. The nonprofit aimed to pull in $2.5 million and managed to rake in a little over $4 million.

The dollars came rolling in as Tebow’s star power rose up.

Donations doubled when the genuflecting player took over as quarterback for the Denver Broncos and guided his team to a swift eight victories, the Huffington Post reported in January.

In total, executive Erik Dellenback told the Daily that 7,000 donors came forward last year, and an estimated 18,000 people paid $25 to become part of “Team Tebow,” which gives members first dibs at volunteering at the organization’s events.

Part of its appeal is likely the vast range of programs contributors can connect with.

The nonprofit fulfills wishes of kids battling life threatening diseases, helps children in the developing world suffering from treatable physical disabilities, brings colorful playrooms to pediatric patients and supports homeless and abandoned children in the Philippines.

“Certainly those kinds of numbers -- where you see millions -- is an indicator that it [the charity] resonates with people, that they can do so much so quickly,” Ken Berger, president and CEO of Charity Navigator, told the Daily.

In addition to its wide reach, the star quarterback’s hands-on involvement with the organization’s work shows just how invested he is.

Back in February, Tebow made a dream come true for a 10-year-old girl with a rare tumor condition when he took her out on her first date ever.

“It made me feel very excited,” Presli Collins old HLNTV.

Though Tebow saw donation numbers skyrocket when he made waves for the Broncos, he sees no plateau in sight as he gears up to head over to the Jets.

“God has opened a new door and we look forward to adding New York to the list of cities that we serve!” the Tim Tebow Foundation posted to its Facebook wall when the trade was announced in March
