Tim Tebow to Organize 45 Proms for People with Special Needs
Steve Helling
@stevehelling 01/25/2015 AT 10:15 AM EST

Certain things come to mind when one thinks about a prom. Limo rides. Prom gowns. Corsages. Dancing. Tim Tebow.

Wait. Tim Tebow?

The former NFL quarterback – and current SEC Network analyst – has continued with his commitment to charity work, this time creating a special night for thousands of people with disabilities.

On Feb. 13, the Tim Tebow Foundation will sponsor 45 simultaneous Night to Shine prom events in 26 different states, as well as two locations in Uganda and Kenya. More than 7,000 people with special needs will dress up in tuxes and prom gowns for what's likely to be their first prom experience in their lives. Thousands of volunteers have signed up to make the events happen around the globe.

"It's not just me; it's not just our Foundation," Tebow says exclusively to PEOPLE, "but it is all 45 churches and volunteers in 26 states, three countries, coming together to show love and make a difference in more than 7,000 lives."

The vision for this idea came after members of Tebow's foundation experienced a similar event last year at a local church. "After seeing the smiles on their faces and the way it impacted their whole family, we were certain this was an event that needed to be shared with the rest of the country," says Erik Dellenback, executive director of the Tim Tebow Foundation. "We wondered what would happen if we challenged churches to step up and make a difference in the lives of these special children, and the response was incredible."

The organization is putting their money where their mouth is, footing the nearly $600,000 bill to provide the traditional trappings of a prom, including photographers, limousine rides, hair and makeup beauty stations, food and a dance floor.

And there's more: Tebow, one of PEOPLE's 2014 Sexiest Men Alive, will surprise the kids by showing up at one of the venues. We predict he'll be the perfect prom date.

The Night to Shine event is one of many facets of Tebow's foundation. Last month, the foundation opened a hospital in the Philippines. The Florida-based organization also includes Timmy's Playrooms in children's hospitals, the W15H program, and Orphan Care, a program that provides grants to families adopting children with special needs.

"It should always be about helping others," Tebow told PEOPLE in November. "It's important to do something bigger than yourself."

And as for the Night to Shine, Tebow is eagerly anticipating the special night – and plans to make it an annual event. "Jesus is going to shine on this night," says Tebow, a devout Christian, "and the special needs community will shine on this night. That is what is so special about this."

Tim Tebow Blows Signing Bonus on Charity Donations
Jul 30th, 2010

Tim Tebow is portrayed as mature beyond his years. And in many ways he is. But even the great Tebow can still fall prey to the temptations on a 22-year-old with money.
According to reports, Tebow has already blown through his $2.5 million signing bonus on various worldwide charity organizations focusing on famine, education and home-building.
"Hey, it's his money now and he can do with it what he'd like," said Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels. "But, sure, you'd like to see a bit more responsiblity and discretion from someone you hope will become a leader of the team. I've seen a lot of young players go broke being stupid. I hope he doesn't do the same."
Tebow admits it may have been a little foolish to blow through $2.5 million in 24 hours.
"The money was burning a hole through my pocket," he said. "I just wanted to help people. There are so many people in need who can't afford a delay in aid. But, sure, if I had more time, I might have researched some of the charity organizations a little more to make sure all of the money will be used in the best possible way."

Not all of Tebow's bonus went to charity, however. The quarterback also used some of the money for personal use — a down payment on a luxurious downtown Denver loft apartment. He plans to live there until he completes the renovations needed to make it into a soup kitchen, one he hopes will be the nicest soup kitchen in the United States if not the world.
"I have been blessed with this money and I want to help others," he said. "I don't need this bonus. I can easily live off of my regular salary.

How many of us can say I fully funded and built a hospital for children who otherwise would have never recieved medical treatment?

Tim Tebow can.

BReif61 04-22-2015 08:39 AM

There is no question about Tebow being a good person, but being a good person =/= being a good football player.

To wit: Aaron Hernandez was much more successful in the NFL than Tebow.

flipper35 04-22-2015 08:48 AM

If Tebow would just go do some thuggery he would fit in better.

That is sadly said only half jokingly.

McLovin 04-22-2015 08:54 AM

I've always found the vitriol directed against Tebow by the press, media and public to be very puzzling. I don't get it.

VincentVega 04-22-2015 09:04 AM

Vitriol? That's a bit strong dont you think. Great athlete but average accuracy, speed and slow throwing motion at the pro level. Is he so popular because he's religious? It cant be for his qb prowess. His popularity doesn't make sense to most. He would be a great underdog story if he had the ability.

I don't think the religious aspect was initially the draw. I think it was first because he was a winner. Hardworker, and then also a devout sort. The religion would never have been known by the masses if he were not a winner first. Later the backlash because that's just how things work: build up tear down. He has the talent, just not as a pro QB. He could likely convert and have some success but thus far he has been unwilling to do that.

He is a likeable guy and I hope with Chip Kelly he will see some measure of success and to hell with the naysayers.

Does anyone here think that the Russell Willson factor is at work here?
He's too short and only has a decent arm.....but accurate.
How in the hell did he end up the starting QB in the super bowl 2 years in a row?
Not bad for a fourth round pick.

It took coaches that were willing to try something different from the normal pro offence, for one thing.

Sure, he had a hell of a defence to help but few defences shut down that
Sea Hawk offence for any length of time.

Russell Wilson is a far better passer than Tebow.

Tobra 04-22-2015 09:35 PM

Mr Russell is a bit fleeter of foot than Mr Teebow also, I believe. They both appear to be bright, fine young gentlemen though.

jyl 04-22-2015 09:40 PM

What would convince the Tebow fans that he is not competent to be an NFL QB?. Suppose the Eagles cut him without starting him, would that convince?. Or would he actually have to be the starting QB for several games, and then be cut?

I have no particular view on Tebow, just asking about the depth of his fans' faith in him.

Totally agree, which is why I would love to see Tebow succeed. The NFL needs more role model quality men on the field.

Baz 04-23-2015 04:26 AM

The only NFL team Tim has played for worth a hoot was Denver and IMHO the head coach was never behind having Tim as their QB. When that happens, the QB will only be there a short time. Yes, as the starting QB, Tim helped Denver make the playoffs and get through the first playoff game. The next year they traded for Manning and the rest was history.

What the Jets did with his talent is criminal.

No one is saying he has the best arm in the NFL. But his arm together along with his other skill set makes Tim a force multiplier.

He deserves better than he has gotten thus far in the NFL - and maybe now he will get it - from Chip Kelly.

I don't expect everyone to agree with my comments but when have all fans agreed on anything and everything anyway?

The point is - this should be the best opportunity Tim has ever had in the NFL so let's just see what happens....
