Years ago after having my tools in various portable boxes (and cabinet drawers and cardboard boxes), I broke down and bought stainless steel bottom and top units at Costco. They are HEAVY. Empty, they certainly weight at least 300 lbs. As mentioned above, drawers slide easily with one finger anywhere on the drawer handle. I'm pretty happy.

Not a very good picture, but I am very happy. For well under $1K.

Black and Decker Workmate 79-001 Type 8

Scored this the other day from Craigslist for only $30. This model was discontinued Oct. 1, 1981 according to Black and Decker's parts list which I found online.

Workmates were pretty much the originator of that style of portable work bench . I have the blue one which was the heaviest duty model they made if I remember correctly . They work great , only complaint I have is it's quite heavy . But that's why it is strong . Nice score there !

That looks just like the one I have. And I know I did not get it back before 81. More like 91. Maybe there is some small model change that I can't see, but I have one just like it. Maybe mine is black. I would have to go to the storage building to be sure. As I remember I have orange handles. Maybe that is the model difference.

Anyway, it is handy and does fold up to be pretty small.

I have my grandfather's workmate from the early 80'. Love it. Super handy to have around and it is indeed heavy!

After purchasing the Workmate, I found some interesting information.

Ron Hickman was the inventor and also developed the Lotus Elan.

It appears that the earliest ones had an aluminum lift structure and metal base.

Workmate Type Study

Yes Glen, it appears Black & Decker made minor changes and either changed the model and or type number for minor changes of parts.

Back & Decker ServiceNet seems to be a good source for information on our Workmates.

Not as good as Graig's chainsaw.

But I got this from the dumpshop for $20. It's quite well made and heavy. I feel it makes the house look more Italian LOL

The Dumpshop appears to have expensive wine.

Nice table.

Thanks Harold. the wine inspired me to take the pic and add to the thread.

The Scottish in me made me drive for an hour to get my favorite wine at a minor discount (fuel/time/wear and tear ) so I guess that qualifies for the thread as well.

Confession time: I do love the dumpshop.

I had one of those that my grandmother had bought my dad back in the 70s or early 80s. It didn't have a built in step on the front and the wood was a nice plywood. It was pretty much all a heavy grade steel or wood with little to no plastic (just the hard plastic feet and the orange clamp feet that went into the holes). I bought one back in the late 90s, but it was much thinner metal, particle board and plenty of plastic, but it did have a step in the front. When my dad passed and I got the old one, I got ride of the new one because it couldn't hold a candle to the original. When we sold our house about 5 years ago, I let it go in a garage sale, probably for $10 or 15.

this is just like the one that I had. Apparently, it's a B&D Workmate Model 79-009 if the Internet is to be believed
