Arrow in a deers head?
This has to hurt, because it hurts to just look at.
” ![]() New Jersey wildlife officials are looking for a deer that survived being shot in the head with an arrow. As seen in the above image (click to enlarge), the deer showed up around noon Friday in the Rockaway Township backyard of Susan Darrah, who photographed the animal from several feet away while it stood behind her home. The animal was traveling with several other deer at the time. Darrah, 64, posted the photo to her Facebook page Friday with the caption, “Want to know what sucks? THIS!! Tried to capture him to no avail…..he can eat, run and there's no blood, less chance of infection. I just feel so bad for him...” Two other photos snapped by Darrah--who uses a Nikon Coolpix--can be seen here and here. Darrah told TSG that the deer returned to her property late-Friday afternoon, then again Saturday morning and afternoon. Darrah said that she has left corn and pear pieces in an attempt to lure the animal back so that she can summon New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife workers to try and tranquilize the animal for treatment. New Jersey bow hunting season opened recently. In a Facebook post, Darrah said she believes that, “this was not done intentionally. any hunters i know would have looked for this deer knowing they missed a clean shot. |

Years ago a buddy got his first bull Elk running away with a 50 yard shot to the back of the head. Immediate lights out, 50 feet from a road in the St. Helen's area.
I'd rather be lucky than good.

------ Awful but at least they're attempting to put things right. It could have been a lot worse for this animal.

Guys in the shipyard threw welding rod at the log booms. There were a few seagulls swimming around with rods stuck into them..hay, that was the
60s......well before the PC police.

I'd like to think we as a society have evolved past whoopin' it up over the "sport" of blowing some defenseless animal's brains out for absolutely no reason whatsoever. I've got news for the redneck/poop-kickers out there - it isn't a sport at all. Give the animals a way to shoot back - THEN you've got yourselves a "sport".

That's a pretty small doe to be drawing on,,,,
I grew up hunting everything from squirrel to deer but, it was primarily supplementing the table. None of the men in my extended family hunted for sport per se. Neither my father nor I hunted bow but, one of my uncles did. I have mixed feelings about the bow. If done right it's more humane. Other than feeling the initial impact (which is less), the trauma on the animal is much less in terms of pain and stress (gunshots). On the other hand, I'm convinced more injured deer are lost as a result of the bow than a firearm. Looks to me like the arrow penetrated right behind the rear molars, totally believable.

I hear you ( and agree )...but maybe that wasn't the one targeted. Intended target was missed and this gal was down range, took a step in the wrong direction at the wrong time? I know I'm reaching a bit, but without knowing the circumstances, any comment is a bit of a reach as well.
One in a million shot? Kinda like Costanza's dad and the "Fusilli Jerry pasta model episode"?

My friends call me, Top
|
10 or 12 years ago I shot a nice buck (dropped in his tracks) and when I was looking him over he had an arrow head stuck in his skull just behind the right antler. It is a shame when people make a poor shot, weather with a bow or a gun and the animal has to suffer. I use a shotgun (with full sights) and I refuse to shoot if it will not drop it dead. I have passed up hundreds of deer over my long hunting years (40+) because of my personal convictions. Unfortunately there are many hunters that do not use good judgement. They take questionable shots in low light conditions and then cannot complete the tracking of the animal that they have grievously wounded.
I am not a fan of bow hunting because it doesn't give a quick death, it provides in most cases a mortal wounding. Think about it. Why are hunters regressing with their weapons ? Is the slingshot or bolo the next big thing for these folks ? Do they feel good about making something suffer ? I enjoy watching the deer as much as I enjoy the hunt itself. They are fascinating animals. Even the native American peoples dropped the bow when the guns was available. I sure this will draw some very strong conjecture, but it is my opinion. Like it or lump it.
