What the heck is going on in Atlanta?

I lived there in the late 1990's. I remember Turner field being built. I can't believe they are getting away with this, but I do see the point about attendance. That stadium is in the hood.

Turner Field will be demolished after Braves leave - CBSSports.com

Atlantans please ring in on this.

It's all about the money. Citizens of the Atlanta area whether your from Fulton county or any other in the area won't have a say in this decision. Just my opinion.

We used to autocross at the old stadium next door before the new one was built. They took away our lot and stadium, so I've never been to a game since.

It seems to be all people here are talking about. The new stadium will still have an Atlanta address but in a different county.

I will say that if I had a promise from the City of Atlanta in one pocket and a promise from Cobb County (where they are moving to) in the other I would wipe my ass with the one from Atlanta. The City is a corrupt nightmare to deal with and they will bleed you dry if you let them. It seems the Braves aren't going to let it happen.

Good for them. I don't think I have been to a game since Dale Murphy was in the lineup.

What Will said- the money that goes to the Braves games are in the suburbs- the Metropolitan Atlanta area has a population over 5 million but Atlanta proper is only around 500,000 - tearing down the old stadium will only make more money for the political cronies for the demolition job- they should make it into a casino / horse racing track that would bring in millions in revenue- I don't think the gaming crowd cares that it would be in the hood.

I just find it amazing that "whoever" would let them demolish a 20 year old stadium. The Dome is obsolete already too? Houston can't get rid of the Astrodome and Atlanta is already to move on from this stuff built for the Olympics. What a weird place.

The mayors promise to build housing for the "middle class"? Doesn't make sense. They couldn't get restaurants and such down there with the stadium. Who's going to want to LIVE next to the hood and no place to eat or to go?

I used to loyally watch every Braves game I could back in the 80's when the Super Station came into existence. Those games were on all week! I remember even getting excited when ESPN's Wed. night baseball included the Braves - otherwise that night it wouldn't air in deference to ESPN.

Then came the season with no World Series.

Lost ALL interest in the game.

the problem with the "old stadium" is logistics. You simply can not get there easily. You have to park several miles away and ride shuttle buses over and such. Major PITA. They did a study and found that over 80% of the fan base lives in the northern tier so they are bringing the stadium closer to the fans. The new Falcons stadium almost made it out there also but secured the downtown location at the last minute. The new location will really suck for most commuters also. It is situated in the busiest interchange in the city and is already known for massive delays. A game at 5-7 pm will wreck even more havoc. great...

That's always been my gripe about Atlanta. Lived here sine the 80's after growing up in Detroit suburbs. Say what you want about Detroit (I've already said it), but there are ethnic neighborhoods, businesses and facilities that endure for decades upon decades. Tiger Stadium was a heart breaker when they tore it down but at least they used it for 109 years!

Nothing seems to last/endure in Atlanta. Always exceptions of course, but Turner field is a good example. It's a world-class facility and I'd have to disagree with comments above. It's downtown but no harder to park and access than any other city stadium. The GA Dome is just as nice...but alas, no more.

Atlanta is a great city (Little 5 points, Buckhead, GA Tech, Emory, Aquarium, etc.) and far, far from ever becoming like Detroit....but it sure would be nice if there was some enduring permanence to the major attractions.

We used to autocross in the lot of the new stadium! I believe the lot was where the old stadium was located. You gave up to soon!

Atlanta is it's own worse enemy. This is a town of transplants. People don't go to see the Falcons, Hawks or Braves, they go to see who they are playing against!

And yes, the stadiums are much harder to get to here then other cities. The Ga. Dome isn't bad, but Turner is awful. Most cities, you park in lots that are on or adjacent to the venue, not park 5 miles away and take a shuttle bus to get there.

Yep, done that many times. The outline of the old stadium is in the concrete!

I hope that it doesn't jack up our taxes in Cobb later on. They say it wont go up now, but who knows down the road.
Per the most recent poll on WSBTV over 70% don't want them in Cobb.....

If they want to move/build then they should have to pay for the entire thing and not count on Cobb to fund some of it....

I live in Grant Park and as sad as it is to see the Braves move to Cobb, it is more pathetic that Turner Field will simply be torn down. This city's ability to waste money is beyond explanation.

Mayor Reed's exuberance in announcing the 'middle-class housing" that will be built on the site is almost laughable. I mean--the Braves have dealt with the ineptitude of the city to develop the horrible area around the Ted for 17 years. I think the only thing that will happen to that area is that it will become even more depressed than it is now.

Whenever I come home from traveling and get off on the Turner Field exit to get home I always wonder what visitors think when they come to see a game. (I know what they think--they think they're going to be killed)

Can you truly blame the Braves for taking the better deal?

Now the city council is demanding action, including the dumb-dumb member who represents the full-on ghetto that surrounds the stadium. How can anyone take her seriously?

Oh well.

we still autocross at the old (Fulton County Stadium) ground. It appears that autocross will end at that venue. May be a few years but this is surely the beginning of the end.
